Requirements to become a foster parent
The DHS assists foster families with placement and ensures the child adjusts well to their new environment. Whether you have years of parenting experience or are relatively new to the idea, they have many support options for families. You can find plenty of information on the DHS/DFCS website or call them for more assistance.
Your local licensed child placement agency also places children in the foster system with carefully matched parents. Although foster care is temporary, it's crucial to find the right fit. That's why parents get a say in age range and gender.
There are also many state support groups for foster families that provide educational resources, services, and more. Connecting with these organizations and adding to your personal support network will be invaluable.
One of the best ways to become a better parent, whether you plan on fostering a child short-term or adopting, is to read as much as you can about Georgia's foster system. For instance, recently proposed bills would help to streamline parts of the state's foster care placement system.
You can find plenty of information available online for free as well. Blogs, podcasts, and videos are all incredibly useful ways to obtain new information about fostering.

This place is a terrible place for any child with mental health. I just got out of this hell hole about 3 weeks ago. The people here do not care about anything. The nurses never care about children. They only care about when they get off work. Lots of children get PTSD from this place. They dont listen to you at all. I will say some of the staff really do care, but ita rare. Please, do NOT send your child here!!!! There are better places!!

I would not recommend this place to anyone. The staff is very unprofessional and clueless except for James in the front off and Tim who does transport are the only knowledgeable people at this facility. They should be running the place. On my nephew first day there we asked several questions and all we got from the staff was " I don't know" We were locked in a room with my nephew and I had to literally bang and kick on the door to get the staff attention and she told me she would be back and never did. It's like they are to busy to do their job or tend to the kids needs. I am just glad my nephew is finally out of that place

My son is at this facility currently, I do not have any problems so far, my son calls every night, I get a chance to see him every other day, I saw him Friday March 22, 2019 and again March 24, 2019. I ask him daily what did he do that day, and he always starts out with i brushed my teeth and put on deodorant. Everytime I see him he is clean. The staff is more than willing to talk to me about how my son was doing, and I asked my son also was he being treated okay and he told me yes while flying a paper air plane around. the only thing I would change is the place where the children get to speak to there loved ones. I can never hear my son and he can't hear me for all the yelling of the kids. The purpose for kids going here is to be evaluated on whatever situation that concerned the person who felt the need to put them there for there safety. It's not a vacation. I have a meeting in the AM in which I have to drive 4 hours. My son is not in residential care so I can't speak on that part, I can only speak on the part I have observed, and I feel they need to be commended on what they go through and have to deal with. the staff is always nice and very informative, I love the security, I have know complaints thus far. Thank you Laurel Heights for a great job, I feel confident we are going to get my SHUGGA DROP back on track!!!

I was here about a year ago and it did not help me at all. When i had first found out I was going the next day(due to court) i looked up reviews. I paniced when i saw the reviews. When I arrived it wasnt that bad. This place does take care of food and snacks and gives you shelter so it is better that nothing. My problems where mostly with how staff deal with problems. One of the rules was 1 staff member for every 4 kids. Once a new girl was put in our unit there were 4 of us but when fights would emerge the staff would not do much to stop it. I had got injured when another patient had fought me several times and had my glasses broken, a black eye, chipped tooth, and other injuries. The staff that had called my parents had lied to them saying that a cut i had was above my eyebrow but in reality it was on my eye lid in addition to the black eye i had that they failed to mention. I had also witnessed and delt with agressive staff. For example a girl had tried to jump a fence to run away from the hospital. In attempt to get the other patients in their units, even though i was walking to the unit door to go in, a staff member grabbed my arms then pinned them behind me and pushed me into the unit hard enough to hurt me. Laurel Heights also will provide medicine but while i was here i had misdiagnosed with ADHD. They had called my parents to tell them about giving me treatment for it. My parents were not okay with this since I had informed them about a problem i saw a lot. This problem being that the nurses will give you so much medicine that it seems like you aren't all there. Lastly if you self harm they will not stop you. Two examples of this that i Had seen is when a plant they had around has sharp pointed and hard tips to the end of the leaves. Though not seeming like much a girl doubled up leaves to self mutilate herself. The staff did nothing and even said that They didn't care because she wouldn't get far with it. The second example is a girl had self harmed and drank chemicals. She was left unattended long enough to do this but also once the girl was bullied for it by other girls she started yelling. The response of a staff member was "calm down chemical girl."
I was lucky enough to get pulled out of this place by my parents but some people aren't as lucky. Please never send your child here, it is a toxic environment.

I was here for a month for suicidal tendencies 6 years ago and it was literally the worst month of my life. This place is Hell itself. My roommate and I got into a physical altercation and she wound up trying to bite my toe off and the staff just stood there and watched as I sat there screaming and crying, trying to get her off me. If you do ANYTHING the staff doesn't like, you will be put in a very tiny locked room for hours with no food, water, or restroom. Some patients have anger issues that cause them to throw desks and chairs (yes, this happened) and the staff will just leave the room and leave the patients in that dangerous situation. The schooling here is a joke. I was in 8th grade at the time and was told that I was doing on level assignments, I went back to my actual school and was so far behind, I barely passed. You are forced to go to a church sermon every Sunday morning, which is totally fine if you're religious...but if you refuse to go, they'll lock you in the tiny room. When admitted, you are forced to strip completely naked in front of a staff member in a room with cameras as the staff member looks at every single mark on your body. Some nights, you are kept up all night by other patients screaming and crying and if you complain, you're told to shut up and go to sleep. You are only allowed certain times to use the bathroom. You rarely ever get to see or talk to your loved ones. A patient was literally MURDERED here, and they are being sued by the family. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE OR SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE. TAKE THE BAD REVIEWS ON THIS HELL HOLE AS TRUTH.
