Requirements to become a foster parent

Adults who are new to the fostering process sometimes feel overwhelmed and wonder if they will have support on their journey. Your child-placing agency is the first resource. Social services caseworkers provide aspiring foster parents with various types of support and connections. These include free educational training programs, helplines, and support groups.

It is important that foster parents build their individual support network, too. Connecting with other foster families with more experience is an excellent place to begin. Texas groups offer foster parent meetups; you can search online for the closest one.

The Texas Foster Family Association provides state training, a regional directory of support services, a summer training conference, and more. Membership benefits include getting access to foster care professionals and learning more about ways to become better caregivers. Children of TFFA members can also get assistance through the Scholarship Fund.

Austin Angels is another support organization that strives to assist foster parents and Texas foster children. They offer care packages and gifts for foster children and their caregivers, mentorship options, and education, among other resources. Foster children and teens can learn valuable skills that help prepare them for independent living, as well.

We were just matched with TAC on New Years Eve, was holding our baby the next day!! They have been such a wonderful agency to work with from the beginning! Stacey the director is so sweet and just all around wonderful. We also worked with Jennifer and she worked with us to get us through every step! I could tell she loved doing this and supported mom so well, that meant everything to us! We love Jennifer and Stacey so much! Thank you thank you thank you!!

I cannot shower enough praise on TAC & words cannot convey how incredibly supportive, professional & loving they were throughout our adoption journey.

We were working with another agency in our home state of IL & losing hope with a very long wait, when dual listing with TAC was suggested to us. We begrudgingly reached out to TAC, & felt immediately encouraged & embraced by all the folks we encountered at TAC. They were determined to find our child for us, & explained their process in a thorough easy manner.

We were matched with a biological mom the same day our TX clearances were approved! Lindsay, the bio mom’s counselor was an amazing guide who facilitated a real connection between us & the bio mom, & we were over the moon. Lindsay constantly checked in with both us & the bio mom to make sure we were growing our relationship & getting the support we needed. After months of developing a genuine connection w/ bio mom, Lindsay was just as devastated & shocked as we were when bio mom had a change of heart. Both Lindsay & Stacey, the Director of TAC, really counseled us with compassion.

When I was hitting rock bottom after the change of heart, Stacey provided the guidance I needed to soldier on, when she told me the only thing that would make me feel better would be when she put a baby in my arms. Then she promised to do just that. Then she did it, she found us our son.

All the team members at TAC are dedicated to adoption, and experts in their field. They are believers in the process, and they are there for you during the highs and the lows. They treat you like family, and I will be eternally grateful for the tireless work they put in to bring our baby to us.

My husband and I had a great experience working with TAC for our daughter’s adoption. From helping us start a relationship with the expectant mother to continue answering all of our questions even months later after our daughter’s birth- they have been wonderful.

The Texas Adoption Center, and specifically Lindsay, truly changed our lives. We found the agency after a long wait with no matches at our local agency in Minnesota. We now have the most beautiful daughter in our lives, and we feel so lucky to have placed through this agency and with Lindsay.

We matched with an expectant mother in February with a June due date! Lindsay was there every step of the way providing a truly extraordinary amount of support. Adoption is not always an easy path, and we cannot thank Lindsay enough for the continuous love and support she provided to us.

You can tell that this is not just a “job” for Lindsay. She is truly passionate about creating families and providing the much needed support to both the adoptive parents but also the expectant parents. As much support that we needed through the process, she was also a trusted advocate and support person for our birth mother to make sure she was getting the emotional support she needed. She did so much for both sides!

After a bumpy ride in the hospital (again, adoption is not guaranteed to be “easy”), we spent countless hours with Lindsay to help us understand the situation. Fortunately, it all ended up working out for us and she to this day is still helping support us as we make our transition back home and to become new parents while still supporting birth mother and an open relationship with the family.

We have so much love for Lindsay and the whole team at TAC! Thanks for making our dreams come true, and we hope to work with you again for a future adoption! ❤️
