Requirements to become a foster parent

Adults who are new to the fostering process sometimes feel overwhelmed and wonder if they will have support on their journey. Your child-placing agency is the first resource. Social services caseworkers provide aspiring foster parents with various types of support and connections. These include free educational training programs, helplines, and support groups.

It is important that foster parents build their individual support network, too. Connecting with other foster families with more experience is an excellent place to begin. Texas groups offer foster parent meetups; you can search online for the closest one.

The Texas Foster Family Association provides state training, a regional directory of support services, a summer training conference, and more. Membership benefits include getting access to foster care professionals and learning more about ways to become better caregivers. Children of TFFA members can also get assistance through the Scholarship Fund.

Austin Angels is another support organization that strives to assist foster parents and Texas foster children. They offer care packages and gifts for foster children and their caregivers, mentorship options, and education, among other resources. Foster children and teens can learn valuable skills that help prepare them for independent living, as well.

We absolutely love and recommend Texas Adoption Center!! We adopted our sweet girl in March, and the whole experience was smooth and special. Kaitlyn G is the sweetest person; and I loved that she helped us answer every single question we had about adoption back in September 2019 when we were just inquiring, and walked us through all of the home study and application steps for the next few months! The agency was extremely organized and wonderful at communicating with us. We became an active waiting family in February and were matched with a mom only 12 days later (though I know that’s different for everyone). We love that they take a limited number of families at a time.

The agency does a really great job at taking care of the birth moms and making sure they have the support (financial and emotional) that they need. I’ve been happy with how our adoption specialist, Jennifer, has befriended our daughter’s birth mom and taken her under her wing. She’s been wonderful at connecting us with the birth mom so that we can have a great open adoption plan with her.

Something that was very important to me when planning to adopt was finding an ethical adoption agency. I wanted to know how the moms were being taken care of during and after pregnancy and where the money was going. I really liked that they don’t prematurely match birth moms with hopeful adoptive parents early in the moms’ pregnancies. They really work with moms to make sure that this is what they for sure want to do, and then match them with a family during their last trimester. That decreases the failed adoption rate and doesn’t allow much room for coercion. They are very respectful!

Thank you, TAC, for changing our lives! ❤️

We really enjoyed working with them with our third adoption! They were so compassionate, professional and didn’t make it about the money at all! We definitely recommend them to anyone in the adoption world!

We are so grateful we found TAC. Kaitlyn G was available at all times to answer our questions and even just to listen and offer encouragement when I needed it. Then once we were matched, we were blessed to work with our adoption specialist, Lindsay. We are grateful for her for many reasons, but one of the sweetest is how attentive she was to our birth mother. It brought so much peace to our hearts to know that our sweet mama had Lindsay watching over her through her whole pregnancy! Even in the hospital during delivery, Lindsay was making sure she was comfortable, making sure the nurses were tending to her, as well as communicating with us about what was going on. Adoption is a DIFFICULT journey, but Kaitlyn and Lindsay were like angels from heaven helping us the whole way.

We recently adopted our little girl with help from Texas Adoption Center. We had a wonderful experience from matching to placement. Our liaison with the agency, Lindsay, was incredibly helpful. She was always available (and still is even after placement), and she took great care of our birth mom (and still does). If you're looking to adopt, this is a great agency to help you.

We had an amazing experience with this agency. Our social worker Lindsay was thoughtful, caring and incredibly supportive throughout our hospital stay while we were adopting our daughter. I couldn’t imagine having done this without her!
