Requirements to become a foster parent
Adults who are new to the fostering process sometimes feel overwhelmed and wonder if they will have support on their journey. Your child-placing agency is the first resource. Social services caseworkers provide aspiring foster parents with various types of support and connections. These include free educational training programs, helplines, and support groups.
It is important that foster parents build their individual support network, too. Connecting with other foster families with more experience is an excellent place to begin. Texas groups offer foster parent meetups; you can search online for the closest one.
The Texas Foster Family Association provides state training, a regional directory of support services, a summer training conference, and more. Membership benefits include getting access to foster care professionals and learning more about ways to become better caregivers. Children of TFFA members can also get assistance through the Scholarship Fund.
Austin Angels is another support organization that strives to assist foster parents and Texas foster children. They offer care packages and gifts for foster children and their caregivers, mentorship options, and education, among other resources. Foster children and teens can learn valuable skills that help prepare them for independent living, as well.

We were active with this agency for a little over 2 months before we welcomed our sweet baby home. We found that this agency was very active, and usually saw 1-4 cases a week. The volume of placements surprised us after being active with multiple other agencies for 8 months and hardly seeing any cases. We found this agency easy to work with and we’re able to call and take to them whenever we had questions. Upon matching and placement our agency social worker, Jennifer, was wonderful! She is so kind and easy to talk to, and she made sure to always keep us informed.
Post placement is also been a smooth process. We were given clear instructions of what needed to be done and Jennifer has continued to check on how we are doing.
We would definitely recommend this agency to Active families!

Texas Adoption Center surpassed our expectations. This was our first time going through the process so we didn’t know what to expect. From our first point of contact we had a good feeling that this was where we were supposed to do. Kaitlyn made the intake process seamless. Always positive. Always upbeat. Stacey not only helped us through the match process, which were a roller coaster of emotions, but made time to call and check in to make sure we were ok. After matching, Jennifer helped us facilitate a relationship with our daughters birth mom. The care she’s given this beautiful woman brings tears to my eyes. The most impressive thing is even after placement, Jennifer still maintains a relationship with her. A month after placement, Jennifer organized a lunch for all of us with our daughters birth mother. It really broke the ice for us to continue the relationship with her. I can not thank TAC enough for all they do for these brave women and us nervous adoptive parents. Thank you will never be enough.

We started our adoption process hearing so many great things about TAC, and because it was covid, everything slowed down. It took us several months to finally be accepted by TAC, but once we did, TAC has been nothing but amazing. They are so well organized, so efficient and on top of their stuff, they are great about communication and we had hoped all this time that we would match with TAC. And we did!! It only took 4 months, and we just loved working with Kaitlyn on the application stuff, and Stacey the director who was always super transparent and great at communicating with us. Everyone on the team are so sweet, easy to talk to, so supportive and understanding. And of course our lovely case worker, Jennifer who was there from the start of our match and she was there with us every step of the way. She made the whole process so smooth, and we just really felt like we made a new friend who was able to help walk us through communicating with our birth family, and was even at the hospital before we got there. She took such good care of our birth mom too and made sure she wasn’t alone and TAC are such advocates towards birth families which was super important to us. We never felt like we were left alone to figure anything out ourselves. We are now proud parents to one sweet baby girl. We just adore the whole team and can’t wait to come back to TAC when we’re ready to adopt our 2nd child!

My wife and I were matched to a birthmom through Texas Adoption Center, and I cannot speak more highly of the organization. Everyone we came into contact with was excellent. They answered questions quickly and did a great job keeping us up to date throughout the whole process. We also thought they were very good to the birthmom, which was something that was very important to us. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking to go through the adoption process.
