Requirements to become a foster parent

Adults who are new to the fostering process sometimes feel overwhelmed and wonder if they will have support on their journey. Your child-placing agency is the first resource. Social services caseworkers provide aspiring foster parents with various types of support and connections. These include free educational training programs, helplines, and support groups.

It is important that foster parents build their individual support network, too. Connecting with other foster families with more experience is an excellent place to begin. Texas groups offer foster parent meetups; you can search online for the closest one.

The Texas Foster Family Association provides state training, a regional directory of support services, a summer training conference, and more. Membership benefits include getting access to foster care professionals and learning more about ways to become better caregivers. Children of TFFA members can also get assistance through the Scholarship Fund.

Austin Angels is another support organization that strives to assist foster parents and Texas foster children. They offer care packages and gifts for foster children and their caregivers, mentorship options, and education, among other resources. Foster children and teens can learn valuable skills that help prepare them for independent living, as well.

I am not a person that leaves many reviews unless my experience was just over the top amazing, which Texas Adoption Center delivered. Every interaction from the second we contacted this organization was full of compassion, encouragement, and support. We used 8 different agencies and they were by far the best one we used. We have them, God, and our equally as wonderful birthmom to thank for our gorgeous, happy, thriving little boy. We will never be able to thank them or sing their praises enough. You absolutely cannot go wrong by choosing this agency!

We are very pleased to recommend Texas Adoption Center with our highest rating. We adopted Thérèse-Marie when she was 7 days old. The next day, she had emergency bowel resection surgery. She then spent 54 more days in NICU. Through it all, Kenna and Heather were 100 percent supportive and available to answer our questions. They helped us with medical costs, navigating Medicaid, bringing our out of state home study into compliance with Texas, ICPC regulations, and came to visit Thérèse-Marie. We are very grateful for the support of the Texas Adoption Center and would recommend them highly to any potential adoptive families. God bless y'all!(we're from Iowa, but we were told we have to say y'all the Texan way now 🙂)

We adopted twice with TAC, once in Amarillo and again most recently in Dallas, Texas. We were from out of state, so our situation was a bit more complex. They guided us through the process, and we are so happy that we worked with them. We evaluated other agencies as well; TAC was so personable and understanding and flexible... it is hard to imagine a better experience TWICE. Kaitlyn, Stacey, Jennifer.... all of them were so great!!

I wanted to take a minute and say what a wonderful experience we have had with TAC. We just arrived home with our son who we adopted through them and we couldn’t be happier. We had an amazing experience with them the first time around (when we adopted our daughter 2 years ago), so we decided to return to them for our second adoption. His story is very different from our daughter’s but our experience with Texas Adoption Center made the process go smoothly and helped us feel comfortable both times. For us, the thing that really sets them apart and makes us feel comfortable working with them is the way they support their birth moms (and birth families). That is SO important on so many levels and it is probably the hardest thing to quantify, but we can attest to the fact that for both adoptions, (even though we worked with 2 different adoption specialist s), it is something that TAC excels at and we can’t recommend them highly enough.
