Requirements to become a foster parent
Adults who are new to the fostering process sometimes feel overwhelmed and wonder if they will have support on their journey. Your child-placing agency is the first resource. Social services caseworkers provide aspiring foster parents with various types of support and connections. These include free educational training programs, helplines, and support groups.
It is important that foster parents build their individual support network, too. Connecting with other foster families with more experience is an excellent place to begin. Texas groups offer foster parent meetups; you can search online for the closest one.
The Texas Foster Family Association provides state training, a regional directory of support services, a summer training conference, and more. Membership benefits include getting access to foster care professionals and learning more about ways to become better caregivers. Children of TFFA members can also get assistance through the Scholarship Fund.
Austin Angels is another support organization that strives to assist foster parents and Texas foster children. They offer care packages and gifts for foster children and their caregivers, mentorship options, and education, among other resources. Foster children and teens can learn valuable skills that help prepare them for independent living, as well.

TAC was amazing and so helpful. They were available for any questions that we had, and when we did have some uncertainty due to outside issues they were kind and immediately had their director and lawyers on the phone to discuss options! Jennifer was amazing! She loves our birth mom and held her hand through the entire process! TAC blessed our family beyond measure!

We are so thankful for Texas Adoption Center! We’ve been blessed to adopt twice with TAC and had wonderful experiences with both. Everyone we worked with was kind, knowledgeable, and compassionate. When we started our adoption journey, we researched many agencies but that search was over once we found TAC. Kaitlyn and Stacey were so sweet and explained the process to us, answered all our questions, and were upfront with the cost and process. Most importantly, TAC offers wonderful support to birth mothers. Our adoption specialists we worked with, Jennifer & Gina, were amazing. They genuinely care and were always available to answer our questions. They held our hands thru the process (especially the hospital experiences!), and provided the best support to our birth mothers. We are very grateful to them
and the beautiful work they do. We could not recommend Texas Adoption Center enough.

My husband and I came across this agency and immediately liked the smaller, personalized feel after speaking to Kaitlyn. They answered all our questions when we had them, and have treated everyone involved with kindness and respect. Our birth-mom ended up going into labor a month early when her coordinator was out of the country, and they had 2 other coordinators come in from different areas to be there and support the birth-mom and us with anything we needed. Even though things didn’t go as planned with the timing of our daughter’s birth, they were in touch with the hospital to make sure everyone was on the same page as to handling everything, including facilitating getting my husband and I our own room after our daughter’s birth (the hospital had room. This is not always the case.) We’re in the post-placement stage, and Jennifer (birth-mom’s coordinator) has been great at helping us with communicating with the birth-mom through the process, including helping us build a relationship foundation before the birth. If you’re searching for an agency, I would say they are definitely ones to check out.

My husband and I worked with several agencies and TAC impressed us the most. From the very beginning, our relationship with them felt completely open and transparent. The whole TAC team was supportive, and great at communicating and keeping us informed, which we appreciated so much! This was true from the director (Stacey), to the social workers (Heather and Jennifer), as well as the office team (Kaitlyn and Kenna). While in the hospital meeting our baby boy and his biological mother, we experienced first hand the way TAC treats the expectant women they work with - which was with kindness and respect. We would absolutely recommend TAC to others considering infant adoption, and will definitely be reaching out to them again when we are ready to continue growing our family!

I can't say enough good things about TAC. As an adoptive parent, everyone I worked with at the agency was extremely professional and I felt so lucky to have matched with them. My adoption specialist, Pamela, went above and beyond in every way possible. She was so incredible in facilitating the relationship between me and the birth mom and offered us both all of the support that we needed and more. I couldn't be more grateful for Pamela and that she played such a big part in me becoming a mom. I truly believe that Texas Adoption Center is the best agency out there. 10/10!
