Requirements to become a foster parent
After deciding to foster, make sure your household members are on board with what will be a life-changing decision to foster. Then, educate yourself about Ohio's requirements for foster parents. Applicants who want to foster or adopt in Ohio must:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Live in a safe and stable home
- Meet home safety requirements
- Clear a background check with fingerprinting
- Provide at least three character references
- Provide ample space for a foster child in their house or apartment
- Attend foster parent orientation
- Take part in required hours of foster parent training
- Maintain financially stability
- Prove good health
- Complete the Home Study process
To apply or ensure you meet the prerequisites, there are two primary Ohio state resources. Contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) or a local Public Children's Service Agency (PCSAs).
If you are ready to learn more, contact a local child-placing agency to schedule foster parent information orientation. At orientation, aspiring foster parents learn more about foster parenting responsibilities, navigating the foster system, and the foster application process. If you have questions, orientation is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and meet other potential foster families.
Administrative paperwork can take some time to complete, but having everything prepared will ensure it goes smoothly. It will help the process move along if you gather financial documents ahead of time. These include tax filings and paystubs, which you will need to show as proof of financial stability.
Foster parents in Ohio must also attend 24 hours of pre-service foster parent training. This training teaches foster families about the trauma experienced by all foster children. It also covers how to provide general and specialized care to foster children.

When we began considering adoption we did what everyone else does, searched the Web. We found several companies that offered "free" consultations and classes and none of them really struck with us. Then we found Building Blocks Adoption Services. From the first consultation we knew that they were working for and with us.
Has it been perfect, of course not. However, we are strong believers that the true character comes through in a time of tribulation and during those times the Building Blocks staff were supportive, understanding and demanding when they needed to be.
We had to spend two weeks in another state waiting to be cleared and there wasn't a day that somebody from Building Blocks didn't check on us and make sure things were going okay.
We would strongly recommend Building Blocks to anyone that is considering adopting a child.

My husband and I researched local and national agencies and continually felt drawn to Building Blocks. We are thankful to have partnered with them on our adoption journey. The office staff, social workers and Denise were so helpful and responsive in answering any questions we had. We are grateful for their kindness and knowledge as we expanded to a family of three.

I can't say enough good things about Building Blocks. As a single prospective adoptive mom, I was turned away from several agencies. But Building Blocks embraced me and advocated for me. I was very impressed with their responsiveness, guidance through the process and their high level of ethics. I would not hesitate to recommend them to prospective adoptive parents. I am now lucky enough to be the mom of an amazing 16 month old who is the absolute joy of my life! We are forever grateful to Building Blocks for making us a family. ❤️ We are both #bettertogether.

Building Blocks handled our situation perfect. They made the process both knowledgable and professional while including all the important care instructions prior to adoption. When it came time to adopt, employees from Building Blocks took personal time out of their schedules to make sure we knew how to take care of a newborn. We are forever grateful for the service Building Blocks has provided to our wife and beautiful son.

Our experience with Building Blocks has been awesome! The ladies are very helpful throughout the entire process. They have helped us with all of our questions and concerns. They are excited for us as we complete each step of our finalization process. It's not just a job for them, they truly care about our family. They also care greatly for our birth mom. They made sure she had everything she needed before during and after the birth of our daughter. We were in contact with our birth mom throughout the entire process and still are today. We admired working with them so much that we used them for the adoption and finalization of our second daughter! Because of our faith and Building Blocks Adoption Service we are able to sit here today and admire our little girls. A lifelong dream come true!!!
