Requirements to become a foster parent

After deciding to foster, make sure your household members are on board with what will be a life-changing decision to foster. Then, educate yourself about Ohio's requirements for foster parents. Applicants who want to foster or adopt in Ohio must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Live in a safe and stable home
  • Meet home safety requirements
  • Clear a background check with fingerprinting
  • Provide at least three character references
  • Provide ample space for a foster child in their house or apartment
  • Attend foster parent orientation
  • Take part in required hours of foster parent training
  • Maintain financially stability
  • Prove good health
  • Complete the Home Study process

To apply or ensure you meet the prerequisites, there are two primary Ohio state resources. Contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) or a local Public Children's Service Agency (PCSAs).

If you are ready to learn more, contact a local child-placing agency to schedule foster parent information orientation. At orientation, aspiring foster parents learn more about foster parenting responsibilities, navigating the foster system, and the foster application process. If you have questions, orientation is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and meet other potential foster families.

Administrative paperwork can take some time to complete, but having everything prepared will ensure it goes smoothly. It will help the process move along if you gather financial documents ahead of time. These include tax filings and paystubs, which you will need to show as proof of financial stability.

Foster parents in Ohio must also attend 24 hours of pre-service foster parent training. This training teaches foster families about the trauma experienced by all foster children. It also covers how to provide general and specialized care to foster children.

Our experience with BBAS was exceptional. The process was organized and smooth, taking about 3 months to get homestudy approved, 4 months to get matched and we had our baby girl in our arms 6 weeks after that. The process is daunting, but they walked us through all the paperwork, classes and legalities. They were patient with all of our questions and knowledgeable with answers. The support provided was unparralled. They continued to support us even after finalization, always finding the time to talk via phone or sit down face to face and help with some of the challenges of open adoption along the way. We look forward to working with them for our next adoption.

The adoption process can be very challenging and confusing at times, Building Blocks was always there to answer all my questions. We had two failed adoptions with another agency and the lack of communication was very hard for us to deal with. Building Blocks never let that happen. Denise and her staff even answered questions I had during the weekend and after hours. They truly care about the process and making sure that the birth family and adoptive family know exactly what they need to do. It was refreshing to know that someone was there for us at all times. We will be using them again for our next adoption in the future. I will never be able to thank them enough.

Everything is Awesome

My husband and I highly recommend BBAS! They helped us every step of the way with our domestic adoption! We attended one of their adoption webinars on Feb 5, 2014 and on Feb 4, 2015 we were matched with our birthmom and we brought our baby home on March 1, 2015. We had ups and downs throughout the whole process and someone at BBAS was always there for us. Denise is amazing and helped not only us through the emotional journey but our birthmom too. Had it not been for her, I am not sure if we would have our son today. Please know they truly care about the adoptive parents and the birth parents and are there for support through a journey, that when you start it, you never realize how emotional it will be.

My husband and I adopted through Building Blocks Adoption Services and we could not have had a better experience. We now have a beautiful baby boy and have never been happier. BBAS made us feel at ease about the adoption process. They explained things thoroughly and couldn't have been more connected and caring through our journey. If you are thinking of adopting, do not hesitate to talk to Building Blocks. They are amazing and I highly recommend them!
