Requirements to become a foster parent

After deciding to foster, make sure your household members are on board with what will be a life-changing decision to foster. Then, educate yourself about Ohio's requirements for foster parents. Applicants who want to foster or adopt in Ohio must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Live in a safe and stable home
  • Meet home safety requirements
  • Clear a background check with fingerprinting
  • Provide at least three character references
  • Provide ample space for a foster child in their house or apartment
  • Attend foster parent orientation
  • Take part in required hours of foster parent training
  • Maintain financially stability
  • Prove good health
  • Complete the Home Study process

To apply or ensure you meet the prerequisites, there are two primary Ohio state resources. Contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) or a local Public Children's Service Agency (PCSAs).

If you are ready to learn more, contact a local child-placing agency to schedule foster parent information orientation. At orientation, aspiring foster parents learn more about foster parenting responsibilities, navigating the foster system, and the foster application process. If you have questions, orientation is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and meet other potential foster families.

Administrative paperwork can take some time to complete, but having everything prepared will ensure it goes smoothly. It will help the process move along if you gather financial documents ahead of time. These include tax filings and paystubs, which you will need to show as proof of financial stability.

Foster parents in Ohio must also attend 24 hours of pre-service foster parent training. This training teaches foster families about the trauma experienced by all foster children. It also covers how to provide general and specialized care to foster children.

As adoptive parents, we have partnered with Building Blocks for both of our adoptions. They were instrumental in helping us grow our family. We had such a positive experience with the first adoption, that we knew we wanted to stay with Building Blocks for our second adoption. We are now the happy and proud parents of two amazing, loving, and wonderful children.

Throughout the entire process, someone from Building Blocks was available to answer any questions and walk us through the next steps. Their communication is top-notch, and I can't recommend them enough. I especially appreciated their help in coordinating meetings and talks with our potential birth mothers, both of whom we have come to appreciate deeply.

Without the help of Building Blocks, I know that we would not have the family that we have today. I cannot recommend them enough. They have a caring, thorough, and communicative approach to adoption that helps both adoptive parents and birth parents connect to make the best decision for their child.

If you are considering adoption, as either an adoptive parent, or a birth parent, I would strongly suggest contacting Building Blocks to get more information.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about our experience working with building blocks. From the very beginninng, Sandy and Denise were quick to communicate and answer questions and were very flexible and accommodating. We are foster parents with two fosters in our home and building blocks allowed us to share our existing homestudy and moved us through the paperwork and profile building pieces very quickly. We were matched with a wonderful birth mother within the first couple weeks and this week have welcomed our son home. The entire process has been smooth and we have felt supported and that our birth mother was being supported the entire way. Courtney has been amazing to work with and has answered all of our calls and texts, day or night. We will forever be thankful to BBAS for helping us start our family!

I'm a birth mom. I choose this agency cause I wanted to place my daughter up for adoption so she could have the home I could not give her. Once I had everything they needed to confirm the pregnancy. The process was smooth going and when it came to pick her family it was not easy but when I made my choice I called my caseworker. She was so happy we set up a second interview with them and they were so happy and we had a very happy day. I only had a few requirements and they were more than happy to make them happy. And the requirements were to give her my first letter and middle name first letter and I had a name pick for her to give her a name has I carried her and what made me really happy was the kept her middle name I had gave her while I carried her. I choose and open adoption so I could watch her grow and the family is more than happy to keep in touch with me. It was not easy for me when it came down to placing her up for adoption but this agency made it less stressful cause I had a difficult thing that needed addressed but they helped me work through them and I still keep in touch the caseworker I was assigned. Thank you for reading my review.

We loved working with this agency! They were all very personable and made the process easy and understandable. We wanted an agency that not only held our interests but also those of the birth families. They do both with great integrity and compassion. We would recommend this agency to others. - With love Abby & Adam
