Requirements to become a foster parent
After deciding to foster, make sure your household members are on board with what will be a life-changing decision to foster. Then, educate yourself about Ohio's requirements for foster parents. Applicants who want to foster or adopt in Ohio must:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Live in a safe and stable home
- Meet home safety requirements
- Clear a background check with fingerprinting
- Provide at least three character references
- Provide ample space for a foster child in their house or apartment
- Attend foster parent orientation
- Take part in required hours of foster parent training
- Maintain financially stability
- Prove good health
- Complete the Home Study process
To apply or ensure you meet the prerequisites, there are two primary Ohio state resources. Contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) or a local Public Children's Service Agency (PCSAs).
If you are ready to learn more, contact a local child-placing agency to schedule foster parent information orientation. At orientation, aspiring foster parents learn more about foster parenting responsibilities, navigating the foster system, and the foster application process. If you have questions, orientation is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and meet other potential foster families.
Administrative paperwork can take some time to complete, but having everything prepared will ensure it goes smoothly. It will help the process move along if you gather financial documents ahead of time. These include tax filings and paystubs, which you will need to show as proof of financial stability.
Foster parents in Ohio must also attend 24 hours of pre-service foster parent training. This training teaches foster families about the trauma experienced by all foster children. It also covers how to provide general and specialized care to foster children.

Building Blocks played a vital role in making our dreams come true! I would not be holding my perfect baby boy as I type this If it weren't for their hardwork and dedication throughout every step of the adoption process! Not only do we have them to thank for our son, but also for connecting us with a birthmom we are excited to call our best friend & part of our family through our amazing open adoption!

The adoption process is not always a positive experience... however Denise is there at every turn. I found her to be my confidant, my advisor and a friend. She checked in with me more than I ever expected and I appreciated her insight and wisdom of the process. I wouldn't change anything as we were blessed with the child God chose. I was also blessed with the backing of an agency that has obviously been on this roller coaster before and was right there with me through the twists and turns. Not all roller coasters are the same but if you want that smooth coast back into the station Denise and her staff are there to make sure you and your bundle of joy arrive safely.

We were so pleased with our adoption process working with Building Blocks Adoption Services, Inc. From the time our home study was finished until the time we brought our newborn baby boy home was about thirteen months. Building Blocks staff were amazing at answering questions and very responsive even many times during off hours. Our situation was a little unique in that we selected a networking agency out of state. Working through Building Blocks Adoption Services, Inc. we successfully completed the adoption process and have been blessed to have our son in our lives. We have been happy to refer others to Building Blocks Adoption Services, Inc. and have started working together on another newborn adoption.

My husband and I recently adopted our son using Building Blocks and we would highly recommend Building Blocks to prospective adoptive parents. Building Blocks was responsive to our needs and questions during the process and their meticululous attention to the needs of the birthmother and our family lead to a happy ending.

Building Blocks had been a complete blessing in our lives. We have a beautiful toddler girl that we adopted through them and are currently in the process of using them again to adopt another baby. Denise, and all other staff have always been polite, helpful, honest, and available when needed. They show so much love for both the adoptive family and the birth parents. Our social worker is one of the most kind and fun ladies we have had the pleasure of getting to know. She made the process so much more easy and less stressful. Sandy often answers the phone and is the sweetest of ladies. While I've never met any of the staff in person (aside from our social worker) they feel like family to us. I believe this agency is filled with people who love their jobs! If you are looking for an agency to use for an adoption please look into this agency. They will exceed you're expectations and forever be part of your family.
