Laurel Heights Hospital
Our Foster Care program provides boys and girls ages 4–17 with emotional or behavioral difficulties an opportunity to live within the community in the naturally therapeutic environment of a family. Our foster parents are trained, supervised, and supported by the Laurel Heights Specialized Foster Care Treatment Team.
Family consultants work with the foster family, birth parents, case managers, and the child to ensure that therapeutic, academic, social, and medical needs are met. Requirements to become a foster parent
The DHS assists foster families with placement and ensures the child adjusts well to their new environment. Whether you have years of parenting experience or are relatively new to the idea, they have many support options for families. You can find plenty of information on the DHS/DFCS website or call them for more assistance.
Your local licensed child placement agency also places children in the foster system with carefully matched parents. Although foster care is temporary, it's crucial to find the right fit. That's why parents get a say in age range and gender.
There are also many state support groups for foster families that provide educational resources, services, and more. Connecting with these organizations and adding to your personal support network will be invaluable.
One of the best ways to become a better parent, whether you plan on fostering a child short-term or adopting, is to read as much as you can about Georgia's foster system. For instance, recently proposed bills would help to streamline parts of the state's foster care placement system.
You can find plenty of information available online for free as well. Blogs, podcasts, and videos are all incredibly useful ways to obtain new information about fostering.

I loved the staff, Dr's, nurses, therapist! They really knew what they were talking about. If I had to say anything negative it would be that my child's stay was not long enough. We really didn't have time to change things. So we will probably be returning. So if your in need of help the way our family is, ignore the other reviews and know that this needs to be done. I never saw any one hurt, or even a rude person. And I drove the good hour and half drive there every night for a week. So I saw alot. And they paid for my gas so I could be a part of my child's treatment. God bless

I was a former patient at Laurel Heights and I have been out for over a year and still have PTSD flashbacks from the hospital. I had gone in for severe depression, thinking that this place could give me the intense 24 hour therapy I needed. Gosh was I wrong. I felt like I was thrown into prison!! The only reason I was tolerated by other patients was because I kept my head low and stayed as nuetral as possible. Patients were PERPETUALLY in physical fights, and on numerous occasions I remember the staff just watching and not breaking up the fight until at least a minute or two in-- in some cases, a minute was all someone needed to get their head bashed into the floor.
The staff were neglagent, abusive and cruel towards the patients, typically mocking them and laughing at them when they were in distress!!!!
I remember certain situations where a patient would get violent and it is protocol (and totally reasonable) to restrain them and give them a shot to calm them down. However, I saw an 11-year old kid (this person couldn't have weighed more than 90 pounds, I swear) get shoved roughly against a wall, thrown to the floor, and sat on while they called in backup. 6 other staff members came to also roughly handle the child and all the time, the kid was crying for them to let them go because "you're hurting me! please stop, it hurts!!" Absolutely disgusting that not only were the staff so unnecessarily rough with this kid, but also that they had no concern that there was a full-grown man atop her ribs and her arm was in an unnatural angle.
The school as well was a serious disappointment. The teachers have NO IDEA what they are doing, and assign bull-crap work that is for someone 5 levels/grades below yourself. On top of that, once I had been released, they wouldn't give me credits for school, so my school had to fail me!
If anything, this place made me a lot worse. The therapy could hardly be called that, and the majority of the day, you spend in the 'day room'--- a place with nasty, stained carpets, filthy walls and seats that can barely be called seats. They make you sit there and do nothing. /NOTHING/. A lot of people would get a 2-hour CR (community restriction) if they disobeyed. A CR is when they move you into a tiny closet of a room, close the door (that has a small window so they can look in) AND THEN THEY BOLT IT.
I remember hearing kids screaming for them to be let out because they needed to go to the bathroom, or they were in pain, etc. and no one even bothering to see if something was wrong.
DISGUSTING PLACE. For the love of everything in this universe, NEVER send your child here.
