Requirements to become a foster parent
Many adults are eligible to become foster parents in their state but do not always realize it. Each state in the U.S. has regulations and requirements for licensing foster parents. Florida does not require parents to own a large home or quit their jobs and become stay-at-home parents. Florida foster parents must:
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Prove good health and ability to care for a child
- Maintain a stable income
- Pass a background screening
- Finish 30 hours of foster parent training
- Complete a Home Study
The required training course is free to aspiring foster parents. It helps parents learn how to foster children and become licensed to provide foster care in Florida.

We just completed our Home Study with Connecting Hearts. We had a great experience. The process was well explained and Amy and Susan were very kind and helpful. We were very grateful for the resources that they recommended as well.

From the moment that first phone call was made with a million questions Amy has been unbelievable. For over a year she has been our guide, our counselor at times and our voice of reason. Her guidance has lead us on an amazing journey which had lots of ups, downs and sometimes scary moments, through it all she always had an answer for us that eased our stress and anxiety and believe me no question goes unanswered. Beyond just our home study, I can’t think of how our journey through adoption would have been if we wouldn’t have had her taking our calls. Connecting Hearts truly is an amazing service with a personable feel. Amy and Alice thank you for such and amazing journey!

Amy and Melissa were first class and very prompt from day one. If you decide to do an expedited home story, the only hold up will be you. They had a super quick turn around as soon as we got them the required information. Wonderful experience.
