Requirements to become a foster parent

Many adults are eligible to become foster parents in their state but do not always realize it. Each state in the U.S. has regulations and requirements for licensing foster parents. Florida does not require parents to own a large home or quit their jobs and become stay-at-home parents. Florida foster parents must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Prove good health and ability to care for a child
  • Maintain a stable income
  • Pass a background screening
  • Finish 30 hours of foster parent training
  • Complete a Home Study

The required training course is free to aspiring foster parents. It helps parents learn how to foster children and become licensed to provide foster care in Florida.

Things have really gone down hill, especially with the pandemic. It’s always been difficult getting someone from medical to answer the phone but now it’s even more of a burden. Before they moved to telehealth only for appointments, you had to call the office before you could come upstairs. You’d spend at least half an hour trying to reach someone, even though you were early for your appointment.

I had a situation where I was trying to reschedule my appointment for an early time, but was told that nothing was available. Only to find out that the doctors were trying to contact me saying that there were multiple early appointment slots.

My main doctor has been switched so many times. Whether it be due to the doctor leaving the facility or the doctor changing their availability, I have never been told of the changes. I’m only made aware of the changes when I show up to my appointment and I have a new doctor. This is my biggest struggle because it seems that no one has my medical history on any kind of file. I have to sit here and tell every single doctor my medical history all over again. It is extremely frustrating. Every doctor handles situations differently, there has been multiple times where I’ve had to go in for multiple blood work test, either due to negligence of the previous doctor or because this doctor wants do run different test. These test come out of pocket. And it delays me getting my medication.

On my latest appointment, I had my doctor switched yet again without my knowledge. This doctor was requesting I hold off on getting a refill for my prescription and saying i should donate blood and was supposed to send me the paperwork through my email. A week later I had to leave multiple messages through the Healow app, and with 26health, because I still hadn’t received the email. Took the form to OneBlood only for them not to accept it. It is now 3 weeks and I am STILL without medication. After I receive my refill I will no longer be a patient here.

Jason at 26health is the main reason things are getting done over in medical! I have never had any issues with the behavioral side, or the pharmacy.

It has been two years now that I started my transition with Two Spirit now 26 Health and from day one everyone has tried to help in any way that they could.Marge in Mental Health and all the Doctors and Nurses on the Medical side have been wonderful. I just want to give a special shout out to Ms. Joanne Vargas who has answered countless calls from me always with a smile in her voice. What a special lady. Thank you Joanne for being so kind.
