Requirements to become a foster parent

You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care in Pennsylvania. Foster parents for children in need must:

  • Be a minimum of 21 years old
  • Pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting
  • Have time and energy to devote to fostering
  • Live in a safe and healthy environment
  • Prove good health through a medical examination/physical
  • Maintain financial stability
  • Clear all home safety requirements
  • Complete required pre-service training hours
  • Finish the Home Inspection

After fulfilling all requirements during the approval process, licensed foster parents can welcome a foster child into their home. To maintain a valid license, foster parents must also participate in ongoing training each year.

All adults who are living in homes with foster children in Pennsylvania must pass a required criminal background check and fingerprinting. This includes adult children who are family members living at home.

There are other, more detailed requirements for foster homes, such as having a flushing toilet and an operable phone. Prospective foster parents will learn more details during foster parent orientation.

Once you've decided to foster, you can contact a public or private foster agency or the Pennsylvania State Resource Family Association. Foster agencies screen and train prospective foster families and ensure applicants are good candidates for foster care.

When we decided we wanted to adopt, we went to an adoption fair in NYC and were told about Dr. Berger and Adoption Services. We did a little research and called them up. We visited Adoption Services to Interview with them, filled out and provided all the necessary paperwork, told them about us, why we wanted to adopt. Dr. Berger also came to visit us, and then it was just a waiting game. After a few months, we were called about our first daughter, we packed up and drove down there I think the next day. We met one of Dr. Berger's social workers at the hospital, and our daughter, and after a little while headed back to our hotel with our new daughter. She was the best thing that ever happened to us.

All of our interactions with adoption services were so nice, and Dr. Berger and his staff were so helpful and easy to work with. Shortly after our first daughter, we decided to adopt again.

Our second adoption went just as well as the first. Both of our daughters are honestly the two best things that have happened to us. The whole adoption experience exceeded all our expectations, and our family is complete now. From the first phone call through every interaction we've had with adoption services, we could not have gotten a better agency to work with. I highly recommend anyone considering adoption to call them.

Dr. Berger and his Office helped us throughout our adoption journey and we were blessed with a beautiful baby girl who is now 3. Cannot say enough positive things about him and the agency. We would have been lost without his guidance.

Vance refuses to respond to emails, except to tell you to call. In 2021 how is this still possible?

Refuses to answer even the most basic questions. Such as what fees they charges for services. Worst customer service I have ever encountered.
