Requirements to become a foster parent

After deciding to foster, make sure your household members are on board with what will be a life-changing decision to foster. Then, educate yourself about Ohio's requirements for foster parents. Applicants who want to foster or adopt in Ohio must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Live in a safe and stable home
  • Meet home safety requirements
  • Clear a background check with fingerprinting
  • Provide at least three character references
  • Provide ample space for a foster child in their house or apartment
  • Attend foster parent orientation
  • Take part in required hours of foster parent training
  • Maintain financially stability
  • Prove good health
  • Complete the Home Study process

To apply or ensure you meet the prerequisites, there are two primary Ohio state resources. Contact the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) or a local Public Children's Service Agency (PCSAs).

If you are ready to learn more, contact a local child-placing agency to schedule foster parent information orientation. At orientation, aspiring foster parents learn more about foster parenting responsibilities, navigating the foster system, and the foster application process. If you have questions, orientation is an excellent opportunity to ask questions and meet other potential foster families.

Administrative paperwork can take some time to complete, but having everything prepared will ensure it goes smoothly. It will help the process move along if you gather financial documents ahead of time. These include tax filings and paystubs, which you will need to show as proof of financial stability.

Foster parents in Ohio must also attend 24 hours of pre-service foster parent training. This training teaches foster families about the trauma experienced by all foster children. It also covers how to provide general and specialized care to foster children.

We adopted our daughter with Building Blocks. Adoption can be a roller coaster but we felt as a whole that Building Blocks did all they could to successfully match us. I cannot speak high enough of the staff that were with us every step of the way.

Worth the wait!

Although the process was a rollercoaster and long, we couldn't be happier with the outcome. A dream come true!

The staff at the agency prepared us for this process and was with us throughout.

The birth mom had specific requests and those requests were handled according to her wishes.

Couldn't have asked for a better outcome for all involved 😊

We adopted our son through Building Blocks 3 years ago. Our journey wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, but BBAS supported us through it all. Their staff is caring, patient, and works diligently to ensure that prospective adoptive families and birth moms are cared for. We plan on using them again in the near future for our second adoption.

Adoption is an emotional, expensive and extensive process. The roller coaster of emotions you go through is no joke. No matter what agency you choose you're dealing with humans. Human's are flawed and you'll always have a bad review here or there, but in our 2 year interaction with this agency, they showed us integrity, compassion, professionalism and worked hard to match us with the perfect birthmom and child.

I would recommend them to any prospective adoptive family or birthmom choosing adoption for her child. It is a beautiful process that is facilitated compassionately through Building Blocks.

Thank you BBAS for helping us to become parents, we can't wait to work with you again.

We adopted through Building Blocks Adoption Service. They processed both of our adoptions from beginning to end and now we are a happy family of four. The social worker who completed our homestudy was caring and professional! Communication, professionalism and care is what you will receive when working with BBAS. They went ABOVE AND BEYOND in both of our adoptions. We found them to be highly responsive and accessible through the entire process. Their experience was extremely helpful in the more complicated days of adoption. BBAS met our birthmothers often and they provided them with much support and respect. Our birthmoms developed a strong bond with the Social Workers. We love our birthmoms and both of them will always be part of our son and daughters birth story. It is not often you can find experience, professionalism and caring so given this, we highly recommend BBAS!

All adoptive families are 5 stars. How could they not be ecstatic about the gifts of a beautiful child they receive? Where are the birth mother's reviews?. The large fees we can call payment for services of convincing or persuading women to place their children up for adoption. It's all warm & fuzzy while mommy is expecting. After it's "who are you"?
