Requirements to become a foster parent
Many adults are eligible to become foster parents in their state but do not always realize it. Each state in the U.S. has regulations and requirements for licensing foster parents. Florida does not require parents to own a large home or quit their jobs and become stay-at-home parents. Florida foster parents must:
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Prove good health and ability to care for a child
- Maintain a stable income
- Pass a background screening
- Finish 30 hours of foster parent training
- Complete a Home Study
The required training course is free to aspiring foster parents. It helps parents learn how to foster children and become licensed to provide foster care in Florida.

I am a mother placing my child for adoption through them & they have been so great to me... anything they can help with they dont hesitate to do. Choosing an agency is so incredibly hard but carlee and everyone else working for them really help make it easier.

I have had a relationship with this agency for about 8 years, because I adopted 2 children with them. I highly recommend them without hesitation.
We had specific circumstances we were looking for, and Gift of Life worked with us to find the right situation for us. Like many who adopt, we experienced some setbacks, and Gift of Life was supportive and honest all the way through. They kept their word, and found us the children we were always meant to have. Like anything worthwhile, building a family was complicated and emotional and took a long time. If you are serious about adopting, and are looking for integrity, professionalism, sensitivity, and expertise, look no more!
The most important things to us, were not being made to feel guilty if we said "no" to a particular situation, and honesty. The agency offered us more than one situation that didn't feel right, and they accepted our decision without question. They also demonstrated honesty in many situations that arose during our journey.
The owner, Lee, and his wife Jill, spent more than an hour on the phone with me when I was unsure about a situation, and were direct and informative. The attorney for the agency also spent considerable time with me explaining legal matters that arose in another situation. The legal assistant, Amanda, was professional and caring, and even came to our adoption finalization!
Jessica Williams and Joelle Paris were important players in our adoption, and they both made sure I was up to date with required paperwork, and were easily available when I needed them. They both exhibited kindness, honesty, and compassion. I must also mention Roxanne Robertson, and Leah Wild, who helped us earlier in our journey.
If you are pregnant and considering an adoption plan, please know that this agency also serves it birthmothers in the same way. I have witnessed their care and compassion for all parties involved.
Adoption is an expensive and emotional adventure. Gift of Life is a honest and experienced agency. I have had other friends work with this agency, one as an adoptive parent, and one as a birthmother, and both had the same positive experience I did.
In the end, Gift of Life did for my family what years of reproductive interventions from the finest doctors couldn't. They made possible the best gifts of all; 2 healthy, beautiful babies!
