Requirements to become a foster parent

Many adults are eligible to become foster parents in their state but do not always realize it. Each state in the U.S. has regulations and requirements for licensing foster parents. Florida does not require parents to own a large home or quit their jobs and become stay-at-home parents. Florida foster parents must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Prove good health and ability to care for a child
  • Maintain a stable income
  • Pass a background screening
  • Finish 30 hours of foster parent training
  • Complete a Home Study

The required training course is free to aspiring foster parents. It helps parents learn how to foster children and become licensed to provide foster care in Florida.

We are very fortunate to have been connected to Adoption by Shepherd Care. Terri was fantastic to work with and truly helped ease our concerns and walk us through everything, especially with the unknown of adopting during the beginning of the pandemic. They also connected us with other families who had similar birth stories for their adoptive child. Lastly they provided great resources to help us navigate a world that was unknown to us, especially related to open adoption which I’m so thankful we did.

Since I can’t respond to the response of my other review, I want to clarify so that future prospective adoptive parents fully understand what they are getting into with this agency.

We understand adoptions fail…that was not the concern here. The issue is that this agency gave us misleading information about the birth mom, and weird random lies. Not even significant ones.

Even though it obviously was so terrible experiencing this failed adoption, we would not have been so upset if it wasn’t for the way Angela treated and spoke to us at the debrief. Her lack of empathy and even just plain unkindness was shocking. She said, “you won’t get a pat on the back for adopting.”…like what!?

She also told us that our caseworker wasn’t ever looking out for us throughout the whole thing and we were supposed to hire our own social worker separately…which we were never told. So all that money we paid and that was not disclosed. That seems like a strange practice that I haven’t heard about anywhere else.

This agency needs some serious empathy and communication skills training. But beware, this place is in it for the money. They do not care about anyone as people.

We’re so grateful for Adoption by Shepherd Care!!! If it wasn’t for them and lots of prayers, we’re not sure where we’d be today, and that’s the parents to our beautiful daughter!

My husband and I did quite a bit of research when we decided to adopt. We did some research on the internet and asked around (social media, family, friends, doctors). We came across ASC through a Google search. We saw it had almost 5 stars and quite a few reviews so we decided to call and ask some questions. That marked the beginning of our relationship with ASC!

We set up a meeting with Joe, the Executive Director, to see if ASC was a “good fit” for us. We felt comfortable and welcomed the moment we arrived. We knew almost immediately that this was the agency we wanted by our side during this amazing journey!

It was a little less than a year from when we first contacted ASC until we brought home our baby from the hospital. That time was filled with helpful counseling, required homework, creating a profile book, and patiently waiting for a birth mom to choose us.

Throughout our journey, ASC was available when we called or emailed, they were very transparent about the whole process, what the billing and legal aspect would look like, and most importantly, they were extremely caring and supportive!

Many months after bringing home our daughter, we still keep in touch with ASC. They truly care about long term health and happiness of families on both sides of an adoption.

Please know that a lot had to happen to make it all possible, and this is true no matter who you chose to help you adopt. Set up a meeting with ASC, or just call and ask some questions. Once you decide they're the best agency for you, make sure you stay on top of your paperwork and do your homework! Yes, there's lots of paperwork, online classes, and a whole lot of reading and understanding of what adoption looks like. You’ll be amazed at how much you learn about adoption, a lot of which you’ll need to enlighten others on. Work on your profile book (this is important too!) and reach out to ASC whenever you have questions. They’re there for you. Most importantly, stay positive and pray!

We’re beyond thankful for ASC and we hope you will be too! Best of luck :-)

Where do I even start??? ASC was an absolutely incredible agency to work with. We got to know the staff personally even though we were corresponding internationally. They knew us by name and were always available for our questions and help. The support that they provide on BOTH sides for the adoptive and birth families is something I have never heard of outside of ASC. Both sides felt cared for, supported, fully informed, and not rushed or pressured at any point. Relationships between the birth families and adoptive parents are encouraged, facilitated, and fostered. Thanks to them, we enjoy a strong and amazing relationship with our child’s family. There are so many ways for adoption to be scary and confusing, but that wasn’t our experience. 10/10 recommend forever.
