Requirements to become a foster parent

You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care for children in Colorado. Foster parents for children and families must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Maintain sufficient income to support a family
  • Have physical and mental capability to care for children and youth
  • Pass a child abuse background and criminal background check
  • Work with a treatment team and undergo future training
  • Complete a Home Study

Prospective foster families can contact a Colorado child placement agency or your local Department of Human Services. Social workers in these child welfare agencies will provide information about Colorado's child welfare system, foster care, and the adoption process.

Social workers recommended that other adults and children in your home agree to provide long-term home care, too. If everyone is ready to welcome a new child, your local agency will help your home become an approved foster home.

My birth parent counselor was honest and open with me through the entire adoption process. She met with me throughout my entire pregnancy and was very supportive. The post-placement care has also been integral to my healing process. So grateful for JH and all Hope’s Promise has done.

I love Hope's Promise. I went on one of their short-term trips last year, and it was life-changing! They're super professional and organized, and also full of compassion.

5 stars is not enough! I can barley begin expressing how thankful I am for this organization. I contacted Hope's Promise when I found myself with an unplanned pregnancy and not in the place I felt I was able to parent. My caseworker (along with God) helped me though the thought processes and overwhelming feelings I was going though. I am so very impressed with how they don't just give up on the birth mom after the child is placed. They have a heart to help the birth mom heal. There is continued support though a monthly birth moms group. I am now married and my husband and I are now sponsoring a young man though their orphan care side and we have also looked into becoming foster parents though them. I could go on and on about this organization. I am so thankful and blessed to be a part of the Hope's Promise family!

I dont know why they have such great reviews. I placed my daughter for adoption in 2012. I called repeatedly to cancel the adoption and no one would reply.I asked to see my daughter 4x a year and that promise was broken. My case worker, Sarah left the company. I was promised weekly “therapy sessions” (however, every single session was filled with why I’d be a horrible mother and she was better off with the adoptive couple.) I felt like I never stood a chance. And now I never see her. I sincerely hope no mother chooses adoption.

Hope's Promise is the most professional, "on top of every detail" agency we've had the pleasure of working with. (And we worked with a number of them.) We are now parents to a beautiful baby girl, thanks to this agency's vigilance and hard work. It seems like everyone who works there has either adopted children of their own, or are adopted themselves. There is no question that is off limits or too small for them. Thank you, Hope's Promise!!!
