Requirements to become a foster parent
You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care for children in Colorado. Foster parents for children and families must:
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Maintain sufficient income to support a family
- Have physical and mental capability to care for children and youth
- Pass a child abuse background and criminal background check
- Work with a treatment team and undergo future training
- Complete a Home Study
Prospective foster families can contact a Colorado child placement agency or your local Department of Human Services. Social workers in these child welfare agencies will provide information about Colorado's child welfare system, foster care, and the adoption process.
Social workers recommended that other adults and children in your home agree to provide long-term home care, too. If everyone is ready to welcome a new child, your local agency will help your home become an approved foster home.

We have been involved with Hope's Promise for more than 12 years and can highly recommend your involvement with their ministry. The work they do in orphan care around the globe is second to none. They work with in country coordinators and caregivers to understand the complexities of kids who have lost biological parents, who are being raised by other relatives or caregivers, those who have experienced trauma in their young lives and how to guide them toward a bright future using the gifts God has given them.

Although it's been a while since we adopted our son through Hope's Promise, I know it is a wonderful agency founded on Christian principles and caring for needy individuals. From the work they do in Nepal and elsewhere in the world to the domestic adoptions they facilitate, you won't find a more caring and honest organization.

Hope's Promise is amazing. If you are interested in learning more or ready to start the process of adoption please contact Hope's Promise and get more information on the process. What makes them so good? They work very hard to make sure both the prospective adoptive parents and the birth parents have as much training and counseling as they need. From an adoptive parent side of the process we felt supported and encouraged the entire way. We were given guidance on how to complete all the paperwork and the various background checks and other steps to the process. Their training sessions are a huge help to first time and repeat parents, adopted or otherwise. We were given tools on how to work through potential issues that might arise from the fact our child was adopted, given suggestions on how to have the best possible relationship with the birth family and ideas on how to explain to friends and family what adoption is and how it is different from what they may have known or experienced in the past. During the waiting time when we were in the adoption pool we felt supported by our Case Worker with regular check ins to make sure we were still doing ok and asking if there was anything we needed. Once we were picked by a birth mom our Case Worker was at the match meeting helping to facilitate what can feel like a very awkward and nervous situation to being something that is much more comfortable for everyone. Our Case Worker was there for all the important events at the Hospital and we had a placement ceremony with our Case WOrker and the Birth Family, this is something we will never forget as we all prayed for each other and our child. After placement we had regular status updates and visits that are required, but it never felt like we were being “checked up on”. After 6 months we had the Finalization date with the courts, again we were given everything we needed to complete the process and take care of all the paperwork after the court documents were finalized. Hope’s Promise was there to support us and care for use every step of the way of the adoption process. If we decide to adopt again we would happily work with them again and we have shared our story and how wonderful Hope’s Promise is with anyone that asks.

Hope's promise does such amazing work all around the world. I know where my donation is going and I even get updates on my sponsored child! I love seeing updates on her life and all that is going on in the country my child lives in. They do great work and I will continue to support them, and in turn, support real humans all around the world.
