From a small adoption agency serving a few hundred children to a statewide organization serving thousands of Iowans every year, the organization has grown by adhering to one basic principle: every child and family deserves to be safe.

Requirements to become a foster parent
Many new parents are worried they'll be on their own if they decide to foster. That's not true; you have tons of support on your side.
You have the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS). Your local DHS recruits and approves families for fostering and adoption. They also place children with approved parents.
The Iowa Foster & Adoptive Parents Association has handbooks, contact phone numbers, information on training and case plans, useful PDFs for foster parents, and more online.
You also have your local child-placing agency for assistance. They're licensed and approved to train parents and place children in homes. You can find information on how to navigate the legal system or tips for working with birth parents, for example.
Many state non-profits dedicate themselves to assisting foster youth and the families caring for them. They may help with basic care, such as clothing or food, or educate parents on specific topics.

I don't know where I would be today without the help of Vicki and Ankeny Family Counseling. I have been going to counselling on and off for over 4 years. Vicki helped me through major grief, depression and anxiety after a devastating loss and all that followed from that loss. Her knowledge of all aspects of mental health, her compassion and professionalism far exceeds what I imagined counselling would entail. It has literally saved my life and helped me to become a functional person again and more importantly, she helped me find joy again in my life. I will be forever grateful to Vicki and Ankeny Family Counselling...Pam

I have been working with a counselor at Ankeny family counseling services for about 4 years. It has saved my life. Literally. I have been able to work through so much of my trauma and past unhealthy lifestyle, that I finally have hope for my future.
I have also brought my daughter to receive services from them as well. I felt included in that therapeutic process and was grateful for the progress that she made there.

I had a very professional and caring experience. Going to counseling was a hard step for me to take, and I have no regrets doing it. The therapist I am working with is helping me to trust and feel safe enough to open up and begin my healing. I recommend Ankeny Family Counseling to anyone looking for counseling without feeling afraid.
