Restoring Hope, Building Futures, and Changing Lives

Children & Families of Iowa is one of the top family services organizations in Iowa. Through its programs and services, the organization helps everyone from children who need a safe home to adults learning to cope with trauma.

Today, Children & Families of Iowa stands on this foundation of caring as one of Iowa’s largest, most well-respected providers of family services. From a small adoption agency serving a few hundred children to a statewide organization serving thousands of Iowans every year, the organization has grown by adhering to one basic principle: every child and family deserves to be safe.

Children & Families of Iowa doesn’t just offer solutions for families and children in crisis. It offers hope when it seems like there is none left. It offers a chance to build better futures. It offers an opportunity to change lives.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Many new parents are worried they'll be on their own if they decide to foster. That's not true; you have tons of support on your side.

You have the Iowa Department of Human Services (DHS). Your local DHS recruits and approves families for fostering and adoption. They also place children with approved parents.

The Iowa Foster & Adoptive Parents Association has handbooks, contact phone numbers, information on training and case plans, useful PDFs for foster parents, and more online.

You also have your local child-placing agency for assistance. They're licensed and approved to train parents and place children in homes. You can find information on how to navigate the legal system or tips for working with birth parents, for example.

Many state non-profits dedicate themselves to assisting foster youth and the families caring for them. They may help with basic care, such as clothing or food, or educate parents on specific topics.

Do not even try to make an appointment with them. I have called multiple times the past three weeks. First I sent in an online request explaining that I really needed counseling. They called while I was at work and left a message stating when to call them. I called them at that time and they did not answer. They called again and left a voicemail to which I called back following their instructions and they still did not respond. I called a few days later and still no answer but I left a voicemail. For the next two weeks I have been calling them but no one answers. I really need help because I am really struggling with severe past trauma and chronic health issues and it is really disheartening that I cannot get anyone to respond to my calls. I really wanted a Christian counselor because I want a Christian perspective and there are not many in my area. Apparently this office does not want to help people because they cannot even return a phone call. If I was you, I would not waste your time. They are not worth affecting your mental health.

edit: Because I cannot respond to their response due to google limitations, I will post it here. I worked as a receptionist for a counseling company. There is no excuse for not returning calls when someone calls for three weeks. There is no excuse to not call a potential client when they have given you times that they are available. This just takes taking a note of it or reminder and making that call a priority. That is the problem. It is obvious potential clients are not a priority or else you would have returned calls. In regards to your online scheduling process, it does not work for new patients. I tried. I sent in a request because it would not let me schedule without being a current patient. I would hope you would know how to work your system or maybe that just shows even more no one should go here. You do not even know how your business is running from a patient perspective.

I appreciate the counseling at this facility. Everything else is a big fail and I will not return. Horrible customer service. The "receptionist" needs some major lessons in tact and diplomacy or needs a new job.

I would highly recommend. My sons have been seeing Steve for about a year and he has been amazing. My sons aren’t big talkers in general but have an easy time talking to Steve. I can always tell a difference in them when we leave. Very friendly and accommodating staff.

The billing practices of this place are exactly why I will not return. My husband was charged on more than one occasion as if we did not have insurance. They refused to use the insurance card that they had on file already for myself and our marriage counseling session. Finally got that resolved. Tried to cancel a day in advance but since it was within 24 hours, I couldn't without being charged $50. They said it was because my therapist couldn't reschedule someone with such short notice. Even though my therapist doesn't have appointments that early and was solely doing be a favor. I had an emergency this morning that was a result of why I was going to cancel yesterday and completely forgot to sign in and make a short appointment to avoid the cancelation charge. I was then charged $154 for a no show. The therapist and/or office could have tried to reach out to remind me since it was a virtual appointment but nothing of that sort happened. You deal with people who have depression, anxiety, and other issues- things happen. And to charge them an astronomical amount that automatically gets withdrawn from their account when money could even be a source of these issues is absolutely insane!! Not to mention the office lady is probably the rudest person I have ever experienced.

Honestly, therapy was also not helpful. I never got feedback or assistance on the things that we needed. Conversations were not directed and never felt like we were getting to the source of the issue.

But- I will never return solely based on the billing practices or the lady at the front desk. Unprofessional and an overall awful experience. No compassion from this office. RUN.
