Requirements to become a foster parent

Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.

The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:

  • 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
  • 22,892 who entered foster care
  • 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
  • California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
  • 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption

A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.

California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

One word: BLESSING!! Building Bridges honestly were the best agency from day one. Before making our choice, I shopped around and let’s say they were the best! Violet and Annette where patient with all our questions and helped us with all the information we needed to get everything done. Our social workers throughout the process where amazing! Yessica, Sabrina, and Jennifer, always helped in every way they could. They were the best and helpful as always. Our workers were so great throughout our process that I would not have been able to stay on top of my children’s needs without them. Building Bridges always went above and beyond for my children and for that we are completely grateful for them. Victor and the staff really do care about you and your children they listen and pay attention to detail. During the holidays they make the children feel so special and loved. If you are looking for an agency, this is the one. I found the family I have always prayed for, thanks to the Family at Building Bridges!

In 2017, we became the first family to become foster parents through Building Bridges. Working with them and their entire staff was a very enjoyable experience. They offered us training from the beginning of our foster care journey and constant, additional guidance throughout the rest of our experience. This came in the form of supplemental materials, virtual check-ins, and even in-person visits. Every time an issue arose, regardless of its severity, the Building Bridges staff responded in a timely and appropriate manner. For example, when we had trouble with one of the foster children, they offered the assistance of one of their social workers and we were able to resolve the matter together. Likewise, when we decided to adopt one of our foster children, the Building Bridges staff walked alongside us in the adoption process, from preparation until completion. We are very grateful to all of them for their help, especially that of Meena, Kathya, Marcello, Victor, and Robert.
