Requirements to become a foster parent
Utah families receive monthly foster care payments to help offset the costs of raising a child. This stipend is meant for room and board, clothing, and related expenses.
The amount you receive varies based on a child's age and needs. Children that require more attention and care have slightly higher rates.
Foster youth have their medical and dental needs covered through Medicaid. This insurance should be enough for any doctor's visits, therapy sessions, dental exams, etc. Foster children also qualify for free school lunches.
Utah parents can take advantage of mentorship programs that allow them to learn from more experienced foster families. It's an excellent way to connect with others and build a support network. Plus, you'll have someone else to turn to if you have questions.
Utah Kids Belong has an app that gives foster parents access to special discounts from foster-friendly businesses. It's also an easy way to connect with faith-based communities, which may offer other types of support.

I was adopted as a child through Children's Services Society. I have enjoyed their adult adoption support group, meeting other people that were adopted.

We have adopted one child through CSS 10 years ago. We are now using their services for post adoption counseling. Liesl, Ali and Becky have been absolutely wonderful to work with. Adoption has so many different variables for each family and CSS has been able to help us immensely. We have dealt with other Adoption Agency's in Utah in the last eight years. Hands-down, CSS is absolutely the most ethical. They are equally concerned about birth mothers, birth father's, adopted children and adoptive parents. If you are considering their services, do not discount any of their advice or requirements for child placement in your family. They know exactly what they are doing. Other agencies may have easier requirements but that is not in your best interest or your potential adoptive child.

When my husband and I started our adoption journey, we had so many questions and anxieties. As a gay couple, we were unsure of how the process might be additionally complicated for us. We did some research into a few local adoption agencies and were disheartened, feeling like there wasn't an agency nearby that would fit our needs or meet our ethical standards. We figured we would have to coordinate adoption from another state.
In our quest to find a local agency to perform our home study, however, we stumbled upon Children's Service Society (CSS). We ended up in conversations with Liesl and Allison about their adoption program. They were very helpful in answering our questions and explaining their practice guidelines. We were quickly impressed by their level of professionalism and commitment to ethical practices. After consideration, we decided to seek adoption through CSS.
Liesl, Allison, and other CSS staff treated us with respect and sensitivity throughout the entire process. They all helped us feel at ease throughout the match meetings, birth planning process, day of delivery, and post-placement visits. We were lucky enough to form a connection with both our birth mother and birth father. CSS helped to foster these relationships, which we believe helped make the process go very smoothly. We have felt very comfortable and supported during our adoption journey thus far.
Our son was born in March and we are nearing finalization. We feel very fortunate to have gone through this process locally, with closer support and lower costs than we would have otherwise faced. We feel very grateful to have been connected with the adoption program at CSS and would recommend it to others.

We had a fantastic experience adopting through CSS. After doing some research on various agencies in Utah, we were convinced that we should adopt from a different state. Luckily, we eventually stumbled on CSS and quickly realized that they are an extremely ethical and compassionate agency- just what we were looking for! Liesl and Allison kept us well informed and grounded throughout the whole process and treated us as well as our daughter's birth mother with a tremendous amount of respect. We no longer live in Utah, but plan to fly back when we decide to adopt again, just so we can work with an agency we trust.

We used CSS for our home study and post placement visits. They have been so amazing! We love Liesl and Ali. They always answer our questions quickly and respectfully. They have been a great resource for us, especially after coming home with our son. I recommend them to anyone who is in need of adoption services!
