Requirements to become a foster parent

You're never alone when you foster as you work as part of a professional team. Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services partners with many organizations to help support foster children and the families that care for them.

The collaborative Foster Caregiver Mentor Program encourages peer relationships between foster families. It's an effective way for new resource parents to meet with more experienced caregivers and get advice.

Your local DCFS also has plenty of resources online, including parent handbooks, contact information, and emergency service information. You can learn more about child welfare agencies and how to become a foster parent.

A child-placing agency is always there for you, providing support in times of crisis or even when you have questions. Don't forget about the case worker, who you can contact if you feel lost.

Working with the birth parents is another part of a foster parent's job. However, you don't have to simply contact them to set up visitations and calls. Co-parenting with them is often best for the child, and it can make your job easier.

Called in a report of neglect and abuse on my grandchildren. Almost 2 weeks later, still waiting for someone to come see me. Called multiple times to cps in Shreveport no help at all. Talked to the child investigator supervisor in Shreveport. She acted like she had more important things to do. Don't know who else to turn to and my grandchildren are paying the price.

Not working in the best interest on the child(ren) . Will not return phone calls. Will not provide vaild updates. Mediocre services. No customer support. Specifically Shreveport location. Requested information on how to file a formal complaint still no response.

Awful, and you know it’s bad when one of the employees is in the reviews (mrsbooks) and giving it 5 stars to combat the low rating. She most love not answering the phone and being condescending.

Can't do something as simple as provide an updated phone number via the customer service line. I have tried to do so online but they schedule you a new appointment at your old number and you have to scramble to try and get them the new number but the customer service line picks up and hangs up on you and your assigned case worker is unlikely to go online and look at the change of phone number resulting in automatic closure of your case when they can't reach you. I've even faxed over required info before and was simply told it was illegible and case readily closed. It's very obvious they do not care about truly being helpful. I shouldn't have to be fearful of changing my number.
