Requirements to become a foster parent
The DHS assists foster families with placement and ensures the child adjusts well to their new environment. Whether you have years of parenting experience or are relatively new to the idea, they have many support options for families. You can find plenty of information on the DHS/DFCS website or call them for more assistance.
Your local licensed child placement agency also places children in the foster system with carefully matched parents. Although foster care is temporary, it's crucial to find the right fit. That's why parents get a say in age range and gender.
There are also many state support groups for foster families that provide educational resources, services, and more. Connecting with these organizations and adding to your personal support network will be invaluable.
One of the best ways to become a better parent, whether you plan on fostering a child short-term or adopting, is to read as much as you can about Georgia's foster system. For instance, recently proposed bills would help to streamline parts of the state's foster care placement system.
You can find plenty of information available online for free as well. Blogs, podcasts, and videos are all incredibly useful ways to obtain new information about fostering.

As an agency employee who has been a nurse since 2010, they provide one of the most comprehensive orientations I have ever experienced with a facility. The nurses all work together as a cohesive unit and I am proud to be part of such a wonderful team. I still have much to learn but I am surrounded by experienced, knowledgable, and capable nurses and staff who are always willing to step in and teach.

At first I was sceptical of this particular facility. My son was placed here in Sept '21... Long story short Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health center provided my son with the necessary tools so that he could get back on track. My son went in broken, coming out fixed. Big thank you to the Phoenix Unit, Mr. Jd in particular, a true angel on earth. Very thankful for this facility, I will never forget the Phoenix Unit as a whole, Mr. Jenkins or Mr. Jd. Thank you all!!!!!!

I am a current foster parent at Devereux Specialty Foster Care. Devereux has helped me become a better foster parent by hiring staff that are trained to listen and effectively help me come up to solutions to my issues, they provide trainings that meet our needs dealing with youth on a daily basis, they care about our youth because the Director will personally call and check on the child she placed several times a week, they answer the phone and respond to emails in crisis situations, they have matched me with youth that have succeeded academically, youth have obtained the IDA savings accounts with DFCS, completed the Orange Duffle Bag Program which teach valuable life skills and gives the youth a laptop when they complete the program, they keep up with reimbursements and send emails detailing pay and reimbursements, respite care is granted when needed, they help with extra services you may need for children with severe mental or health disabilities, they support youth in extracurricular activities and youth that have jobs, they are flexible and visit youth in a way that makes them feel comfortable. When I didn’t have health insurance, they were able to give me my needed tb test. I want to be professional and wish it was acceptable for me to call out names but it wouldn’t be right because everyone has made a collaborative effort at Devereux, to personally help me with the youth that I have. They even helped out with our own biological children. Governor Kemp has appointed our Regional Director, Gwen Skinner, to a board that oversees youth with mental health challenges and disabilities. She was on channel 46 news program, Reveal, advocating for more funding for youth with mental health issues and disabilities. I chose the right CPA to foster through. All I could ever ask for is more quality foster parents to embrace Devereux’s mission and to provide a loving and nurturing home. I can honestly give a 10 rating right now. Now is the right time to foster with Devereux Speciality Foster Care!

I worked here for over a year. I left because of Corporate. I ADORED being with the kids no matter how rude, selfish, unpredictable, predictable, and filled with outbursts a day would be—I LOVED working with the kids. It was tough, but it was sooooo worth it. BUT Corporate Devereux/higher up Devereux/the people in control RUINED this work for me. They did not take care of us DSP staff, they did not fight for us, they did not listen to us, they did not look out for us, they didn’t respect us—maybe a decade ago DSP would’ve been fine with that treatment but no. Its corrupt, uncalled for, discriminatory, toxic, fraudulent, and messed up the way corporate & higher up Devereux ran things and treated us.
Don’t work here. They need to shut down and have an eye opening time. Like losing almost 50% of their staff in a couple months wasn’t eye-opening enough..

I went here twice once in 2012 and one in 2013. Wasnt bad. Not sure how it is now. Ms. Rachel was super nice and so was mr. Jason. However some staff were rude and kids were rude. And if you got a tiny bit sad they would make you stay on the unit.
