Catholic Charities Gainesville provides services designed to help preserve and protect the life of the child, provide care for women and their children, and to assist in the building of families through adoption.

For more than 46 years, Catholic Charities Gainesville has served the local communities of Alachua, Bradford, Dixie, Gilchrist, and Levy counties with charitable services. Our fundamental belief is that we have a responsibility to care for those in need by meeting basic human needs, restoring dignity, and assisting toward self-sufficiency.

By providing emergency financial assistance, food assistance, community outreach services, poverty reduction, and housing assistance, we are putting our beliefs into action to transform lives.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Many adults are eligible to become foster parents in their state but do not always realize it. Each state in the U.S. has regulations and requirements for licensing foster parents. Florida does not require parents to own a large home or quit their jobs and become stay-at-home parents. Florida foster parents must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Prove good health and ability to care for a child
  • Maintain a stable income
  • Pass a background screening
  • Finish 30 hours of foster parent training
  • Complete a Home Study

The required training course is free to aspiring foster parents. It helps parents learn how to foster children and become licensed to provide foster care in Florida.

I've been here plenty of times. Twice for pregnancy counseling and a few time when they have food pantries. The ladies and one guy are very unprofessional and rude. Show no respect towards people and it seems like they favor people. My sister went there to pick up Christmas gifts for me and she had to call me because they ignored her while standing there for a few minutes. While on the phone with her she went to the counter and polity asked how much longer does she have to wait because she was going to be late for work. They claimed they didn't know why she was there (all while others we're receiving there gifts) they never once got up to get the original person who was running the Christmas program! I'm disappointed on the lack of respect they show people in need!
