Requirements to become a foster parent
Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.
The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:
- 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
- 22,892 who entered foster care
- 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
- California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
- 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption
A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.
California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

My eldest granddaughter has been going there since 4th grade for Vision and Orientation and Mobility, Occupational Therapy as well. She has improved on different skills because they work one on one with her. Kit Vong has done a great job with my granddaughter over the years. She us now in the 11th grade and still attending Jr. Blind ( Wayfinder)
Thank you for your dedication and commitment in working with our children

The whole placement and the program at Wayfinder is good. What Have to say about the staff at Wayfinder is that they have exactly no control over the children everyone is all over the place. Residents do what they want without staff doing anything about it. Wayfinder needs to come up with a plan to stop all of this nonsense and find better ways to make the atmosphere more peaceful and calmer and more positive and safer for residents. I have been at Wayfinder for exactly 6 weeks and I already want to leave this placement I do not feel safe in any type of way but the staff and supervisor are doing completely nothing about it. All I can say is that if you are stuck in a position like I was where u did not feel safe and the staff are doing nothing about it speak to your social worker and try to keep up with your program just to make things more easier for you to get out of there and getting into a better and safer placement. My honest opinion is that Wayfinder needs to get shut down until they are able to come up with a plan to stop all the commotion going around and until they are able to provide and care for these children.
