Foster care is when a child is placed in a temporary, safe home in a time of crisis. Adult caregivers, commonly known as Foster Parents or Resource Parents, then become part of the child’s support system, providing them with the necessities of life and healing programs designed to help them process the trauma they have endured. Resource Parents work with the child’s social workers, teachers, and doctors, to proactively nurture, love, and advocate for their needs until they are reunified with their birth family or are adopted.

A Greater Hope actively searches for and approves families that are committed to helping children and can care for and nurture them without hesitation. Families in these positions must be ready to work towards the greater good of the children placed in their care.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.

The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:

  • 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
  • 22,892 who entered foster care
  • 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
  • California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
  • 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption

A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.

California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

I have been with A Greater Hope FFA for 3 1/2 years. It has been an awesome experience. Everyone at AGH works together to provide the support that the resource families need to best meet the needs of the children. In addition to great social workers and mental health specialists, they also have a parent support group that meets twice a week, led by a very amazing parent partner, who is incredibly experienced in a wide variety of foster situations. AGH also has a lot of great events which are SO great for resource parents and the kids to meet each other…. Not to mention fabulous gifts. Finally, one of the things I also love about AGH is that they always include the ENTIRE family. Even my adopted/non foster kids are invited to participate in the activities. They really do place a lot of value on family. I am incredibly grateful to my AGH family.

I have been with Greater Hope for years … this has been our only agency we have been with and work with and my experiences with the Social Workers that I’ve had like Christina Strauss , Jess Schreckengost , Barbara Basham, Kristina Muñoz, Stephania Nevado.
The Director of development Amanda is an amazing human being that cares so much for all this kiddos and works magic for them so they can have great festive holidays specially Christmas! Erin the Director for foster care is such a beautiful person that no matter what you call for and how bad your day is … she’ll still take the time to hear you out and never takes it personal.
We have had amazing experiences with this journey in our life’s. We have grown and learn so much from every single one of them.
Greater Hope offers a mental health department for our kiddos as well, Mary Sue has been directing this department and has done a great job. They also offer a support group for foster parents and Jennifer Miessner is the Parent Partner that provides this support group . I can’t stress how much This support group has helped us as Foster Parents . She’s an amazing woman that has the answers to anything you ask about fostering.
Thank you everyone for helping us in the good and bad’s. You have been on our side throw everything.
