Children At Heart Adoption Services, Inc
|
Children At Heart is a 501(c)(3) non-profit adoption agency, founded in 1995. We are approved in the State of NY and licensed in the State of NC to facilitate domestic adoptions for all US citizens living in any State. We also provide home study, and post-placement services for NY and NC residents. We are a small, family-run agency. I, Janice, am the Executive Director and Erica, my daughter, is the Assistant Director. We each read every email that is sent to the office, and discuss every phone call that we receive. We have frequent meetings to go over the status of all of our pending adoptions, which allows us to get to know all of our adoptive parents on a first-name basis. We are here to give adoptive families the direction and support that they need. In addition to Erica and myself, we also have a number social workers throughout NY and NC who are ready to work with families in those States who need home study visits. Our network of adoptive families are always willing to assist with any questions you might have - before, during, or after the adoption. |

Requirements to become a foster parent
The state requires that foster parents get licensed through their local Department of Social Services or a licensed private agency. These sources will be your best form of support. Through them, you'll receive training and have a point of contact for emergencies.
If you ever have questions, reach out to your case manager. They're trained to assist foster families and the children in their care.
The Foster Family Alliance of North Carolina is a statewide association that recruits new parents, provides training, and offers support. You can find training and webinars online. You can also read parenting tips, find your region, and more.
The National Foster Parent Association is a non-profit that provides training and education. Caregivers can also find free online training through the NFPA.
The NC Division of Social Services (NC DSS) is the agency in charge of overseeing the state's child welfare system. NC Kids assists new foster parents with the early stages of the process. You can find children awaiting adoption and access foster care and adoption support services.
It also helps to form connections with other foster families, especially those with years of experience. You may have questions or need advice from them. It can make you feel like you have someone on your side through your journey.

After using an agency that was not very supportive of their birth moms, I was so excited to come across Children At Heart when I moved to to Wilmington. Over the past 5 years I have been attending regular support meetings which have been so amazing. They not only work diligently to do what’s best for the birth moms they are working with, but they also help birth moms that didn’t use their agency to find a good support system. Potential birth mothers are given the opportunity to meet with birth moms that have already been through the same experience. That was not an opportunity I was given at the national agency I used, I would have benefited greatly from that. I’m just glad I now get the chance to be there for others through Children At Heart.

I came in contact with Erica and Janice over 5 years ago now and I had an amazing experience from day one with them. They were unbelievably supportive and empathetic to my process. They are such wonderful, warm, and genuinely caring people that I still keep in contact with them even as the years continue to go by. This is a deeply complicated situation to enter into and I am thankful everyday that I chose to work with them. They truly gave me the support I needed to carry on and continue to better my life and feel strong and secure in doing so. Thanks ladies, forever grateful.

Although I never thought I would place a child for adoption I couldn’t think of a better place to work with than Children at Heart! They heard me and helped me every single day. Even after almost 8 years they are always a call away. They truly are my life savers and are truly there for every birthmother. It’s definitely not the easiest decision to make but it does get easier as the years go by. They do everything in their power to make sure 1) it’s what you want to do & 2) you have all the support you need. Thank you for everything you ladies have done for me! I can’t thank y’all enough!!

this Place was my last option being that at the time I had no choice but to give my child up for adoption. They made me feel welcome and they made me feel as if everything was going to be ok. I picked out my family and had everything set up at the time of birth. My issue with them is that my feelings ultimately didn’t look matter. All they cared about was the people who were adopting a baby. When I was in labor and I finally was able to hold my child I just didn’t want to let him go. You have a certain amount of time before the adoption is final. I wanted to reverse the adoption. These evil people didn’t take my feelings into consideration at all. Instead they cut me out and communicated with my mom to do everything in their power to not give me my child. I wasn’t on drugs or anything. I literally just got pregnant and I wasn’t prepared. So I listened to my mother instead of my heart. The adoption is an open one although I don’t bother the family. This place is not in favor of the mothers. If I could do things differently I definitely would have never chosen this place. I haven’t heard from them since I gave birth. Choose another place or really consider keeping your child. Things aren’t easy but I live with this everyday and it’s never gotten better
