Children At Heart is a 501(c)(3) non-profit adoption agency, founded in 1995. We are approved in the State of NY and licensed in the State of NC to facilitate domestic adoptions for all US citizens living in any State. We also provide home study, and post-placement services for NY and NC residents.

We are a small, family-run agency. I, Janice, am the Executive Director and Erica, my daughter, is the Assistant Director. We each read every email that is sent to the office, and discuss every phone call that we receive. We have frequent meetings to go over the status of all of our pending adoptions, which allows us to get to know all of our adoptive parents on a first-name basis.  We are here to give adoptive families the direction and support that they need.  In addition to Erica and myself, we also have a number social workers throughout NY and NC who are ready to work with families in those States who need home study visits.

Our network of adoptive families are always willing to assist with any questions you might have - before, during, or after the adoption.

Requirements to become a foster parent

The state requires that foster parents get licensed through their local Department of Social Services or a licensed private agency. These sources will be your best form of support. Through them, you'll receive training and have a point of contact for emergencies.

If you ever have questions, reach out to your case manager. They're trained to assist foster families and the children in their care.

The Foster Family Alliance of North Carolina is a statewide association that recruits new parents, provides training, and offers support. You can find training and webinars online. You can also read parenting tips, find your region, and more.

The National Foster Parent Association is a non-profit that provides training and education. Caregivers can also find free online training through the NFPA.

The NC Division of Social Services (NC DSS) is the agency in charge of overseeing the state's child welfare system. NC Kids assists new foster parents with the early stages of the process. You can find children awaiting adoption and access foster care and adoption support services.

It also helps to form connections with other foster families, especially those with years of experience. You may have questions or need advice from them. It can make you feel like you have someone on your side through your journey.

I was put in touch with them by a free pregnancy clinic. My situation was hard because the only issue was financial. I had a wonderful supportive partner im not super young we just didnt have the funds to give our child what she deserved. Janice and Erika were very nice they were there through the whole process I wasnt happy about doing this and I know I wasnt easy to deal with but they were patient with me no matter how I acted. I found the absolute perfect family they had to be sent to me by God Himself bc they were amazing and still are and its now a year later. There were times that I didnt wanna speak to Janice or Erika (not bc of them bc i was just sad about everything going on) but I always spoke to the adoptive mom she was the absolute best and thats whats cool about this place is the matches are perfect! They care enough to think into who to introduce you to and i was so lucky that they introduced me to my daughter Lexis wonderful parents. If not for them and for erika and janice i dont think I could have done this and it would have been selfish to put my child in the living situation we were in back then. I really recommend this place to both birth moms and adoptive familys bc you can definitely count on these women to care about both sides no matter what. They encourage open adoptions which really does help to know that your child is safe and happy and you create bonds with your childs family that help you throughout the process. I met up with them many times went to lunch with them i definitely was afforded the chance to make sure they were the right fit before they adopted her. And erika still reaches out to ask if I need anything or to offer a support group she even sent a gift card so i could get Christmas gifts for my daughter that I do have with me. So its not like its over because the process is over they still care about your wellbeing! If youre a birth mother and youre unsure of what you want to do i encourage you to at least call and just speak to them I know theyll put you at ease!

I have worked with them for years and they have always been very accommodating, kind and understanding to their clients. They truly go above and beyond to help all parties involved feel comfortable and well educated on all of their adoption options. They are excellent listeners and even provide support groups for birth mothers. If you are thinking of adopting or making an adoption plan, I would highly recommend their services!

These two lovely ladies are the best possible support system you could ask for when it comes to not only an adoption agency but if you ever just need someone to talk to or your going through a tough time there’s been countless times I’ve reached out to Erica or other birth mothers for support and they are all so helpful they make sure all your questions are answered and they never let you feel alone! They don’t judge you or any of your decisions they also keep in contact even after the adoption is finalized and check on you from time to time! I couldn’t recommend them enough because 5 stars doesn’t even begin to cover the amazing work these ladies do! They’re very down to earth and will always have a shoulder to cry on and will always make time to listen to what your going through if you ever need them! I’m so glad I chose them for my adoption journey because without them I’d be lost

There aren’t enough words to describe how amazing this agency is. Janice and Erica were absolutely amazing. They were there for me in my biggest time of need. Through every step of the process possible and led me to the most wonderful family I could ever hope for.

I never thought I would ever have to face the selfless decision of placing a child for adoption. Almost 8 years ago, that was a decision I was faced with. I didn't know where to begin, so I did a quick google search and came across Children at Heart. I dialed their number and was met with a kind, and understanding voice on the other end. Janice and Erica have been there for me ever since that first phone call. I was given every opportunity to ask questions, connect with other birth mothers, meet families I was interested in matching with. They reassured me that it was my decision, and only my decision. They never tried to sway my decision, they never pressured me into signing any paperwork. They were never dishonest with any step in the process. Choosing adoption is the hardest decision a birth mother will ever be faced with, but choosing Children at Heart made the decision a bit easier.
