Requirements to become a foster parent

The state requires that foster parents get licensed through their local Department of Social Services or a licensed private agency. These sources will be your best form of support. Through them, you'll receive training and have a point of contact for emergencies.

If you ever have questions, reach out to your case manager. They're trained to assist foster families and the children in their care.

The Foster Family Alliance of North Carolina is a statewide association that recruits new parents, provides training, and offers support. You can find training and webinars online. You can also read parenting tips, find your region, and more.

The National Foster Parent Association is a non-profit that provides training and education. Caregivers can also find free online training through the NFPA.

The NC Division of Social Services (NC DSS) is the agency in charge of overseeing the state's child welfare system. NC Kids assists new foster parents with the early stages of the process. You can find children awaiting adoption and access foster care and adoption support services.

It also helps to form connections with other foster families, especially those with years of experience. You may have questions or need advice from them. It can make you feel like you have someone on your side through your journey.

I have had the pleasure of working with the fine staff at Amazing Grace Adoptions and Orphan Care in a number of ways. Donnas and her staff are extraordinarily caring and compassionate. They take their job seriously and work within all the relevant laws while also making sure that each birthmom and adoptive family have all the care they need. I've witnessed them basically saving the lives of some children who would not get the medical care they needed had Amazing Grace staff not been there to advocate for the child. These folks are truly amazing and consistently show the grace and love of Jesus to everyone. Thank you!

Amazing Grace Adoptions has been very influential in my life and walk with Christ. At the age of 3 I experienced a life altering event: my family brought home my little baby brother for the first time. My brother is now almost 17 years old, he is so loving, passionate, and smart. It is through the work and mission of Amazing Grace Adoptions that God revealed to me what it means to be adopted into His family. As the years go by this organization continues to care for and support my family and all of the other families they work with. Their mission is, “To serve birth-parents, orphaned & vulnerable children, and adoptive families both domestically and internationally through the Biblical model of family," and they undoubtedly practice this with every birth-parent, every child, and every adoptive family. They seek for what is right and they serve without hesitation. Amazing Grace Adoptions is Christ centered and Kingdom focused. It is a privilege to be a part of their community and to witness how lovingly they work in all types of difficult circumstances with all people.

We adopted our youngest son through Amazing Grace and had an excellent experience. The social worker who did our home study was especially kind and encouraging. The foster parents who took care of our son for his first two weeks were remarkable, loving him and us well. The day we picked up our baby was a beautiful day. The staff at Amazing Grace really made the day special and memorable, taking pictures and having a little breakfast for us! Administratively, the staff were very responsive to questions and paper work issues.
