Children enter foster care for many reasons – poverty, abuse, neglect, but never because of their own choice. Do you have room in your heart to be a Good Shepherd foster family?

There are a variety of services and support available to foster families. Our Fostering Faithful Families ministry reaches out to churches in the hopes of educating the community about the needs of children in foster care.

The process of becoming a foster or adoptive parent usually takes a minimum of 4 months.

Connecting children with families and keeping families connected by providing pregnancy and parenting support, foster care programs, and adoption services.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Foster parents receive a maintenance payment to help cover some of the care costs of raising a child. The rate parents receive varies depending on the child's age and their special needs. Foster children also receive a clothing allowance, covering their medical needs.

The Missouri Department of Social Services website shows you the latest rates.

However, these maintenance payments aren't always enough. Everything from school supplies to toys can cut into that budget. Many businesses and organizations are stepping up to help cover the gaps and assist foster families.

Foster Together provides a walk-in shopping service for foster children free of charge. Kids can find new and like-new clothing, toys, car seats, and more.

Foster parents caring for younger children can look to Nurses for Newborns, which provides health assessments, screenings, education, and more support.

Another valuable resource is respite care, which gives foster parents a break when needed. Respite foster care is a temporary service offered by other trained foster families. It's also useful in the event of an emergency situation.

Good Shepherd has been an incredible agency to work with throughout our adoption journey. Everyone has been extremely helpful, kind, and supportive. Our social worker walked us through the entire process, respecting, answering and acknowledging every question and concern.

The staff has been wonderful and responsive at Good Shepherd. We have loved working with our agent and with Melyssa. They go above and beyond to train and prepare waiting families and to emphasize that the goal is to find the right home for a child and put his or her needs first. We highly recommend them!

Good Shepherd has been so good to us. We have been working with Good Shepherd since 2016, when we started fostering. Now we continue to work with them through private adoption. Good Shepherd makes you feel good and confident about everything you are doing in the world of fostering and adoption. We are so excited as we work with them on adopting our next child. They are compassionate, understanding, hardworking and only want what is best for those that find them and come through their doors. I highly recommend working with them.

Good Shepherd was extremely fast and convenient to work with. They were able to accommodate our schedule. When it came time for adoption we had some external paperwork hiccups and GS went above and beyond to get us documents we needed as fast as they could - outside of work hours even. Recommended!

My husband and I are currently a waiting family at Good Shepherd Children and Family Services. We looked at other adoption agencies but chose Good Shepherd due to how personal and kind the staff is.

Melyssa, our social worker, has been wonderful throughout the entire process. She is a great resource for questions about adoption. She has walked us through the process, making us feel ready for all that is coming.
