Bethany Christian Services
Being a foster parent is so much more than loving a child in your home. It’s also showing kindness to a family when they need it most.
It’s giving a child a safe place to land during a hard, scary time when they’re away from home. And it’s showing compassion to a parent who is likely overwhelmed, scared, and without a lot of support.
It’s helping a child stay connected to the only home they’ve ever known, in whatever way it’s safe to do so, and cheering on a family that’s living out a comeback story.
At Bethany, our heart beats for family. We want to see families strong, supported, and together. But we know there are times when families face challenges—and children need care.
That’s why we’re seeking foster parents who believe in families too.

Requirements to become a foster parent
Many adults are eligible to become foster parents in their state but do not always realize it. Each state in the U.S. has regulations and requirements for licensing foster parents. Florida does not require parents to own a large home or quit their jobs and become stay-at-home parents. Florida foster parents must:
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Prove good health and ability to care for a child
- Maintain a stable income
- Pass a background screening
- Finish 30 hours of foster parent training
- Complete a Home Study
The required training course is free to aspiring foster parents. It helps parents learn how to foster children and become licensed to provide foster care in Florida.

I would say for those who are considering adopting or fostering, the Safe Families program at Bethany could be a great introduction to that. Or even if you never want to go that route and just want to help provide a temporary safe space for children in need, I encourage you to look into it. It is strictly volunteer so you choose when you are available to host a child in your home, and the placements are temporary since the goal is to ensure the child’s family structure is stable so they can return home. Personally, the children we’ve hosted have been great and we still keep them in our prayers.
Every child deserves a safe place, even when mom and dad might be having a hard time. That is no fault of the child. So Bethany’s Safe Families helps with that, and I am grateful for the people who care.
