On any given day in Connecticut, there are thousands of children in foster care and more who need safe, loving homes. Wheeler Clinic’s Therapeutic Foster Care program provides 24-hour-a-day supported family homes to children and adolescents, primarily ages 6 through 17, needing a therapeutic level of foster care. The program also serves younger children as part of a sibling group and works with children over 18 years of age.

The program offers foster families training and ongoing support to help them provide a structured and nurturing environment to children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect, and who may be experiencing symptoms related to trauma, loss and other behavioral health concerns.

Requirements to become a foster parent

You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care for children in Connecticut. Before you start, educate yourself and reach out to a foster care agency. Social workers recommend that you and other family members in your home feel ready before starting your foster journey. Caring for a foster child takes time, patience, and persistence.

Contact your local licensed child-placing agency or attend an orientation meeting to learn more about what fostering entails. They will inform you about foster parent requirements, common obstacles you might face, and unique challenges among foster children. All foster kids have experienced trauma. Training teaches foster parents how best to help foster children manage their feelings and feel secure.

You must meet minimum state requirements to qualify as a foster care provider in Connecticut. Foster parents must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Offer a safe living environment
  • Pass a police and FBI background check
  • Maintain sufficient income to care for a family
  • Complete the 10-week training program
  • Provide a separate bed for the foster child
  • Complete the Home Study process
  • Have a clean driving record (pass a DMV check)

Kids of the same gender in a similar age range may share a bedroom.

Contact the Connecticut Department of Children and Families or a local child-placing agency for additional questions about foster parent requirements.

Attempted to prescribe me multiple meds I'm fatally allergic to by suggesting them under different brand names. They don't have a psychiatrist. They have an APRN pretending to be a psychiatrist. Little to no experience and completely incompetent as any sort of medical professional.

Not a great place to work, overworked and under paid. Management is nice but doesn’t seem to understand what to do when the staff is overwhelmed. I wouldn’t recommend working here.

Had to jump through a lot of hoops to get care. My APRN, Andrew, is awesome, but I can't see him as much as I need to. I was told my only options for rescheduling one appointment were on Sept 1st when I am working. I asked for something else and they said the next time was Sept 29 and I still work on Wednesdays. I should be seen by a provider every two weeks to figure out the right medication management and I can't even get an appointment. Don't go here unless it is your only option. If you are a patient here, be sure to advocate for yourself and don't trust everything they say the first time. There are ways around silly policies if it is in the best interest for your health

I’ve had a very hard time finding APRNs accepting new patients since mine retired. Wheeler Clinic was the only one I could find. I do not have insurance so must pay in full. I’ve had to see 5 different people to finally just get prescribed the paroxetine I’ve been taking for the last 12 years and am required to have counseling separate from seeing a script provider, which I understand for a time but they are astronomical rates. Aside from the most disorganized, untrained administration I’ve experienced in a very long time, I’m having to pay double what I was TWICE every 3 months. None of the many people I’ve had to work with communicate with each other effectively to the point where I had one tablet left before begging them to fill my script for one of THE most difficult withdrawal SSRIs. Kayla is one helpful person I will say. She was able to get the prescription refilled in time and was extremely kind.

Wheeler's Mobile Crisis Unit has had a key role in keeping our daughter alive. Because of their attentive, sensitive approach she has been able to utilize and process additional, more intensive forms of care. This in turn has led to her following a treatment regimen that has allowed her to live successfully with mental illness, as a productive young adult. Wait times can be long during times of peak demand, but still very much worthwhile!
