On any given day in Connecticut, there are thousands of children in foster care and more who need safe, loving homes. Wheeler Clinic’s Therapeutic Foster Care program provides 24-hour-a-day supported family homes to children and adolescents, primarily ages 6 through 17, needing a therapeutic level of foster care. The program also serves younger children as part of a sibling group and works with children over 18 years of age.

The program offers foster families training and ongoing support to help them provide a structured and nurturing environment to children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect, and who may be experiencing symptoms related to trauma, loss and other behavioral health concerns.

Requirements to become a foster parent

You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care for children in Connecticut. Before you start, educate yourself and reach out to a foster care agency. Social workers recommend that you and other family members in your home feel ready before starting your foster journey. Caring for a foster child takes time, patience, and persistence.

Contact your local licensed child-placing agency or attend an orientation meeting to learn more about what fostering entails. They will inform you about foster parent requirements, common obstacles you might face, and unique challenges among foster children. All foster kids have experienced trauma. Training teaches foster parents how best to help foster children manage their feelings and feel secure.

You must meet minimum state requirements to qualify as a foster care provider in Connecticut. Foster parents must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Offer a safe living environment
  • Pass a police and FBI background check
  • Maintain sufficient income to care for a family
  • Complete the 10-week training program
  • Provide a separate bed for the foster child
  • Complete the Home Study process
  • Have a clean driving record (pass a DMV check)

Kids of the same gender in a similar age range may share a bedroom.

Contact the Connecticut Department of Children and Families or a local child-placing agency for additional questions about foster parent requirements.

It's a shame. I used to hold this facility in such high regard. I've known of Wheeler since my childhood, as family members had used this facility prior. It has since fallen from grace in the most ugly fashion.

I am on my 3rd therapist since starting treatment here in late 2021 (I also came here for treatment in the early-2010's). I will not mention names for privacy's sake.

My 1st therapist was mediocre, called out frequently, had to reschedule several appointments, and was not what I needed, so I spoke with the supervisor and requested a change.

I met the APRN/Med Guy (as they call themselves) at this time as well. They're fantastic and have been helping out very well.

My 2nd therapist was damn near perfect, we met 3 times, then they literally ghosted everyone including their workplace. They don't know when, or if, they'll be back.

My next "therapist" was a stand-in until we figured out who I would work with next, who is the department supervisor. I told them that I was extremely unhappy with everything that's transpired thus far. They agreed and said they would also be unhappy. They helped me find my current therapist.

3rd therapist is okay so far. No praises, no complaints.

Now my next MG appointment was supposed to be the 2/6/22 when they get back from vacation. 7:50 PM tonight, I get a call from a restricted number, so I ignore it as I usually do. They leave a voicemail.

IT'S THE FACILITY TELLING ME I HAVE TO RESCHEDULE BECAUSE MG WILL BE ON LEAVE THE NEXT 6 WEEKS!

Yes I'm aware something could've happened, which is fine. But to call at nearly 8pm (when they close) from a restricted number? Seems kind of unprofessional to me.

I really am starting to feel like nobody wants to help me get better. I've tried on my own, and I can't do it alone. That's why I've reached out for help, but because of the insurance I have and my financial situation, I am fairly limited to where I can go.

And in all honesty, I've had all 3 therapists admit that they are not getting the help THEY need from management. Two of which even told me they work harder than they are paid. Could be why employee retention and morale is so low. And trust me, it's palpable at times.

It seems they respond to their reviews, so I'm hoping this may actually get some attention. Maybe they will see their patients are in jeopardy, and not just their wallets 🤷‍♂️

Worst mental health place. The med providers don't give patients the meds they need and most of the therapists take "sides". Their solution for anxiety meds is to prescribe blood pressure medication
