Requirements to become a foster parent

Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.

The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:

  • 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
  • 22,892 who entered foster care
  • 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
  • California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
  • 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption

A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.

California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

These people are the upmost unprofessional, neglectful, as well as poor communication. This organization is only looking to continue the ties with they have with DCFSS. Check case is bond money tied to these people having a job and income going! So much about my kids physical and mental state has been reported and all this organizations as mandated reporters have done is swept everything under the carpet!

My son attended Vista Del Mar for about four years. The staff really cares about the children. I always felt the staff looked for strengths in each and every child and worked to build on them. My son had a special bond with his Speech and Language Therapist, Dr Roper. We really mis this school.

While some of the staff was nice when you spoke to them, the doctors and most of the staff do no communicate.

Our child was admitted because of a dumb mistake, and we couldn’t barely get any kind of information from doctors or staff. When the doctors do call they use blocked ID numbers. Shows their true integrity/ or lack thereof.

Despite Covid being mostly a thing of the past, the facility still follows strict policies where they only allow one visitation per patient, 24 hour notice, and the visitation only lasts 10 minutes. It’s absurd and disgusting. Your children who may already be suffering are basically imprisoned and they make it as difficult as possible to see your own kid.

Then comes the phone “privileges”. Each child is supposedly allotted 10 minutes per night to use the cordless phones they have. Unfortunately due to the fact they do not have enough phones for all children, it’s basically lord of the flies. Instead of giving children a set window of time for each child to make their phone call- they opt for a more chaotic first come first serve system.

Long story short/ Vista Del Mar- your facility leaves a lot to be desired. Lots of room for improvement- especially in the communication department. When someone’s child is being held there, someone should be calling the parents or guardians daily to give them updates on the situation.

If you can avoid this place- please do.

I was a student at this school and just graduated a few years ago and I dont know what my life would have been like If I hadn't attended this school. This school provided the utmost support for me and pushed me as well. I was expelled from middle school and I've had to move across different high schools for various reasons but now with the help of this high school I am in college with grades of B's and higher and I've kept in touch with some teachers to help me along the way.
