Requirements to become a foster parent
Many do not realize the need for new resource families in California. The number of foster kids outnumber the foster families who can provide short or long-term care. Foster advocates work hard to find places for these children, but it is not easy.
The latest 2021 report from the Adoption and Foster Care Analysis and Reporting System (AFCARS) report in California says there are:
- 47,871 kids in California's foster care system
- 22,892 who entered foster care
- 15,386 foster kids awaiting adoption
- California foster kids across all ages, with a median of 8 years
- 33% whose foster child case plans include adoption
A child's median time in the California foster care system is over a year at 16.8 months. 13% spend 3-4 years in foster care.
California needs foster parents to take in multiple children if they have the time and energy to care for them. Sibling groups often need care, and it is essential to support these family bonds. In California, it is challenging to find homes for teenagers, though they need stable environments and reliable adults to support them.

What a Wonderful Group of people, working for an Amazing Organization!!! These people are, TRULY, Such a Blessing for kids who are in Impossibly Sad and Traumatic situations!! I think DHS should Only be ALLOWED to place kids into Foster Care at FFA's Like KBYH, as Opposed to placing them with Foster "Families/Parents" that they Mass Produce; rushing through special trainings, etc!! They receive Funding from our tax dollars (the government) to Pay these (Often Poorly Trained, and Rarely Investigated!) foster homes, as well as GETTING PAID with Taxdollars: for the work that They do on these cases!! I think it is a MAJOR Conflict of Interest, and Too Often results in Assembly Line "Justice"; where the Best Interest of the Children and THE TRUTH ARE NOT NOT their TOP Priority!! Keeping the Money coming in and Job Security are THEIR Top Concerns!! (Sorry for the Rant!!) Kern Bridges goes out of their way to make these kids their Number One Priority!! They take the kids Camping, to the Beach and other activities that give these kids some Fun and Happy times/memories, that Many have not Ever Had! The Social Workers there Completely Invest themselves in the kids!! They'll reach into Their Own Pockets to see that the kids have everything they Need, as well as many of their Wants, too (when deserved/earned)!! The office on Stine and Fjord is So Much Nicer than DHS/DSS; with Lots of Toys, Games and Movies/TV's and Video Games, and it's Beautifully Furnished, with Comfortable, "Homey" rooms for family visiting, etc. I can't say Enough Positive things about Kern Bridges, without feeling like I Still Shortchanged Them!!

They are run by very competent administrators, very thorough but empathetic in their approach to client needs, highly regarded by their peers and community, and outrank all others I'm familiar with. Very 'results' oriented. And they do a lot of neat things with the kids!
