Requirements to become a foster parent

Foster parents receive financial support in the form of a monthly board rate. Foster children also receive a clothing allowance, and their medical needs are covered through Medicaid.

In addition to the support you receive from your local DHS or foster care agency, there are other programs and resources available to parents.

The South Carolina Foster Parent Association offers free training to foster parents and kinship caregivers. You can find information on the latest laws and events as well. Plus, you gain access to valuable resources such as informational articles, contact information for professionals, etc.

The SC Foster Parent Association also allows foster families to connect with one another and share advice. You can find local association meetings in your area on their website.

The program Heartfelt Calling's mission is recruiting and supporting foster and adoptive families. Parents can learn more about the system, start the application process, register for orientation, find webinars, and more.

Foster parents that care for children in DSS custody receive reimbursement for related costs. These monthly foster care payments are meant to meet a child's basic care needs.

The most recent board rates are on the South Carolina Department of Social Services website. Payments may vary depending on a child's age and special needs.

Here are the basics;

I can't say enough positive things about Nightlight!! They truly took the journey with us to help us get our miracle baby. We worked with staff in both SC and GA and absolutely had the best experience possible. Someone was always available to explain the inner workings of adoption, advocate for us as well as the birth mom, and just to listen when I needed a shoulder to cry on. They even came to court with us for finalization to help celebrate with us. We're beyond grateful for what they do!!

When we grew our family through adoption three years ago, we found the Nightlight staff to be professional, caring and informative throughout the process. As first time adoptive parents, we took great comfort in the expertise and frequent communication we received from the social workers. They helped us navigate the adoption journey, making what could be a daunting and stressful experience one that was hopeful and positive. We particularly appreciated the way the staff respected, honored and supported our child’s birth mother before and after the placement. Our family highly recommends Nightlight.

The staff at the Greenville office of Nightlight Christian Adoptions is warm, caring, and professional. They care deeply for birth mothers, and they treat them with respect. We have adopted three times through this office, and they have done an exceptional job helping us navigate the uncertainties that accompany any adoption. We're so thankful that Nightlight is part of our family story!

We've adopted twice through the SC office of Nightlight Christian Adoptions and love the personal attention and care that they give to everyone involved. We love that the office is small and we know the staff by name and vice versa. We've recommended them to multiple friends and love working with them so much that we decided to engage them again as we pursue a third adoption.

Thank you Nightlight for consistently showing the love of Christ through deeply personal and difficult circumstances that swirl with both grief of loss and joy of life.
