Requirements to become a foster parent

You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care in Pennsylvania. Foster parents for children in need must:

  • Be a minimum of 21 years old
  • Pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting
  • Have time and energy to devote to fostering
  • Live in a safe and healthy environment
  • Prove good health through a medical examination/physical
  • Maintain financial stability
  • Clear all home safety requirements
  • Complete required pre-service training hours
  • Finish the Home Inspection

After fulfilling all requirements during the approval process, licensed foster parents can welcome a foster child into their home. To maintain a valid license, foster parents must also participate in ongoing training each year.

All adults who are living in homes with foster children in Pennsylvania must pass a required criminal background check and fingerprinting. This includes adult children who are family members living at home.

There are other, more detailed requirements for foster homes, such as having a flushing toilet and an operable phone. Prospective foster parents will learn more details during foster parent orientation.

Once you've decided to foster, you can contact a public or private foster agency or the Pennsylvania State Resource Family Association. Foster agencies screen and train prospective foster families and ensure applicants are good candidates for foster care.

This one star is for the receptionists !!! Shame on you ! As most people know once a child is 14 they go in on their own as they are legally in charge of their own mental health. The receptionists tasked with signing in the patients are ignorant and berating . Lots of people who are looking for treatment are working through depression, anxiety , PTSD and many other things . So its sad that the first person they see when they walk in the door makes them feel uncomfortable . My daughter went to sign in and one was on the phone so naturally she went to the other one available . She didn't notice a little hand written note one had placed on her window and sat in the chair . The receptionist went absolutely crazy and started screaming at her and threw a temper tantrum and started tearing the hand written note down. Screaming at my daughter saying why bother no body can read or have respect so why did i waist my time putting this hear. she went on and on and on. My daughter who is 17 felt so embarrassed , belittled , and ashamed . Its hard for some people to reach out for help so the first person they see shouldn't treat them this way. The receptionists need sensitivity training and just basic human decency. Also to add : This is not the first time it has happened to her or I . Its an ongoing issue .

This place is a joke and could care less about helping children ! I have desperately been trying to receive help for my child’s extreme anxiety and to get my child tested for adhd … and it has been a mission I pay almost $100 every visit (with my insurance) and all they do is sit there and color for a half hour then I try to get my child tested for adhd they make me wait over a two months to get the appointment just to say I canceled it when I most certainly did not ! I had to pull my child out of school early and miss a day of work for them to cancel on me !! Another time I went and they wrote the time wrong on my card and told me I missed it and I still had to pay and I drive 45 min to bring my child there!! Please parents beware of this place as they could care less about the children they just want money!!!!! I would give them negative stars if I could !!! Absolutely disgusting and horrible!!

Communication in the building is nonexistent. Good luck getting any forms filled out. If you call about any problem, they say yes until you hang up, and forget about your issue.
