  • Be a minimum of 21 years old
  • Pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting
  • Have time and energy to devote to fostering
  • Live in a safe and healthy environment
  • Prove good health through a medical examination/physical

All adults who are living in homes with foster children in Pennsylvania must pass a required criminal background check and fingerprinting. This includes adult children who are family members living at home.

There are other, more detailed requirements for foster homes, such as having a flushing toilet and an operable phone. Prospective foster parents will learn more details during foster parent orientation.

Once you've decided to foster, you can contact a public or private foster agency or the Pennsylvania State Resource Family Association. Foster agencies screen and train prospective foster families and ensure applicants are good candidates for foster care.

Although they have trouble keeping up with the volume of calls, they WILL call back. The lady that helped me, Ann, was super sweet, understanding, and very good at what she does. She was able to help me within a half hour from speaking. Wonderful branch of the organization and they seem to enjoy helping others.

What a joke. I had spoke to Danene, I do believe that was her name. And I reached out to get help with my water bill. I owed a semi large amount. She advised me that Catholic Charities would only be able to pay $250 plus the reconnect fee and I would have to come up with the difference. She even gave me names of other organizations that may be able to help me. So I reached out to one of them and was relieved that one of them could help. I took the difference to the MAWC and called Catholic Charities from the parking lot to advise a payment was made. Sharon is who I spoke with said that was great and would pass it along to Danene. Didn’t hear anything back from them that day. She called me this morning and said that they could not help me, because of there guidelines stating that part of that money had to come out of my pocket. She NEVER said that. All she said was I had to make a payment never once said part of it had to come from me. That was the purpose of me reaching out to them as I had no money. So she tried to turn it around on me stating I misunderstood. No I didn’t. I am a good person just needed a little help. I even missed a funeral of a relative so I could meet and get the difference. I probably could have received the whole amount from the organization but only asked for what I was told to get. I told her I hope she can sleep at night. And I was hung up on. So Catholic’s they are not. A charity they are not. Thought they were there to help people in distress. Not the case. I guess they like playing GOD. Good luck to the ones that do get the help they need from them.

I can’t say enough about my experience! I fell on hard times since being diagnosed with cancer. Work was limited because of several circumstances so income was limited as well. The worries of paying rent and utilities to keep a roof over our head, on top of everything else I was facing, was taking a toll on me. I was advised to call this organization for assistance. I reached Amy, who I spoke to a couple times. She managed to get funds distributed to my fuel company to help with my bill, AND spoke to them about a payment plan for the balance. She want above and beyond! I am so thankful for the help they provided. This is the 1st time in my life I have ever needed to do this. Amy made my experience a pleasant one.
I hope once I get back on my feet that I could contribute to this organization so they can help others through their hard times as well!
