Bethany Christian Services
Being a foster parent is so much more than loving a child in your home. It’s also showing kindness to a family when they need it most.
It’s giving a child a safe place to land during a hard, scary time when they’re away from home. And it’s showing compassion to a parent who is likely overwhelmed, scared, and without a lot of support.
It’s helping a child stay connected to the only home they’ve ever known, in whatever way it’s safe to do so, and cheering on a family that’s living out a comeback story.
At Bethany, our heart beats for family. We want to see families strong, supported, and together. But we know there are times when families face challenges—and children need care.
That’s why we’re seeking foster parents who believe in families too.

Requirements to become a foster parent
You must meet minimum requirements to provide foster care in Pennsylvania. Foster parents for children in need must:
- Be a minimum of 21 years old
- Pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting
- Have time and energy to devote to fostering
- Live in a safe and healthy environment
- Prove good health through a medical examination/physical
- Maintain financial stability
- Clear all home safety requirements
- Complete required pre-service training hours
- Finish the Home Inspection
After fulfilling all requirements during the approval process, licensed foster parents can welcome a foster child into their home. To maintain a valid license, foster parents must also participate in ongoing training each year.
All adults who are living in homes with foster children in Pennsylvania must pass a required criminal background check and fingerprinting. This includes adult children who are family members living at home.
There are other, more detailed requirements for foster homes, such as having a flushing toilet and an operable phone. Prospective foster parents will learn more details during foster parent orientation.
Once you've decided to foster, you can contact a public or private foster agency or the Pennsylvania State Resource Family Association. Foster agencies screen and train prospective foster families and ensure applicants are good candidates for foster care.

Our experience with Bethany started with a Google search. We had no idea where to begin but felt the Lord calling us to adopt domestically. The information meeting was done very well. We were amazed by how much we didn't know, especially open adoption. Each step we took we had faith to keep moving forward. Bethany was the easy part of that! We adopted our sweet boy two years ago and are very thankful we had Bethany to guide and prepare us for the road that eventually led us to adding to our family. Praise God for his grace and mercy! We highly recommend Bethany Christian services.

I have had the pleasure of working with the adoption branch of Bethany Christian Services for approximately 25 years, mostly in the foster to adopt section. It has been an honor and a pleasure to do so. Bethany's social workers and staff have their hearts in the right place, and I am always pleased when a new client contacts me and indicates that they are working with Bethany. They are all good and decent folks who put their clients and the children in their care first. As an attorney who has represented families in over 7,000 adoptions that means a lot to me. My wife and I are happy to support the agency's mission, and truly enjoy attending their annual fundraiser. With God's help, Bethany will continue to assist families in protecting and adopting children for many years to come.

This place is the best! Bethany has helped us navigate a difficult and emotional situation and really turned it into a blessing. We love our case worker and are amazed at the individual attention we are given. Their offices are modern, clean and private. We have enjoyed meeting and taking classes there. The staff is professional, friendly and passionate about what they do. Again the information and roads they have to travel are not easy ones but they handle it with grace, acceptance and love. If you need help with adoption, fostering, or refugees care Bethany is the place to go.
