Requirements to become a foster parent

The Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS) provides foster care support, such as connecting parents to hotlines and listing information about the licensure process. Besides the State Department of Human Resources, many private agencies in Oklahoma are dedicated to helping foster children and the parents that care for them.

The Oklahoma Family Network (OFN) helps children with special healthcare needs. OFN can connect parents with appropriate resources and training. Their Resource Directory lists organizations and professionals by topics, such as food assistance or disability services, so you can easily find help in your area.

The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) is part of the Children’s Health Act. You can learn more about child trauma and trauma-informed care. There are also informational materials and training available through the NCTSN.

Additionally, private adoption agencies offer programs and support for any parent interested in fostering to adopt.

We are so thankful for the way God used Deaconess to form our family. The staff is amazing. Some of the most compassionate, caring people who love and support the entire adoption triad. We have adopted 2 of our boys through Deaconess and highly recommend them to anyone looking for a Christ centered adoption agency. My husband and I are forever grateful to Deaconess for the love shown to our family, our birth mothers and our boys.

Just before Christmas last year, my wife and I received a call from Deaconess saying that my wife may not be fit to be a Mom. Literally days before Christmas they told us this.

How did they come to this conclusion? Well, during the course of their 2-3 hour interaction with her, they learned that her Dad passed away when she was 7 years old. They felt that the loss of her Dad had rendered her unable to parent because, get this, “she didn’t make enough eye contact nor does she remember enough details of her Dad’s death 26 years ago.”

Are you serious?!?!

They told her she needed to undergo psychological testing to determine her cognitive abilities.

If anyone is unfit, it’s the staff at Deaconess. How about you conduct a lengthier interview with her? Double check the references? Do any thing before you decide to tell someone they’re unfit to be a Mom because of a significant loss experienced two decades ago.

Fast forward a year - we went through a wonderful adoption consultant who’s actually good at her job (and got us matched on the very first day)and now we have a happy, thriving baby boy. Our birth mom chose us because she had a feeling that my wife would be a great Mom and she was absolutely right.

Deaconess is the worst.

This was where I was adopted from over 50 years ago. The staff was friendly and helpful with all of my inquiries and directed me to the resources that I needed.

I don't know how to put in words how much I love Deaconess, they have went beyond with making sure I was happy and comfortable with my decision. Love and comfort was pouring out with open arms from these women. I can say with no doubt I highly recommend Deaconess Adoption. 5⭐

We have been affiliated with Deaconess Pregnancy & Adoption Services for over 20 years now. They facilitated the adoptions of all three of our children and have remained an important resource. The staff at DPAS is warm, loving, supportive, and involved in each adoption. They place emphasis on continued relationships post-adoption. They establish close bonds with birth families and adoptive families alike and are dedicated to the best interests of each as well as the adopted child. DPAS has stood the test of time, having been in existence for well over 100 years creating forever families. Most recently, they have expanded their services to include older child adoptions and counseling services. We are forever grateful to DPAS for their role in creating our family of 5.
