New Hope Family Services is a pregnancy resource center and a New York State-authorized adoption agency.

We began as an adoption agency in 1965, serving the great state of New York, and grew to provide a wider range of services to meet our local community's needs better.

In 1986, New Hope officially opened our doors as a premier pregnancy center, offering counseling, education, pregnancy options, and resources to women and men facing pregnancy decisions.

Our Mission
New Hope Family Services seeks to be Christ’s hands extended to offer help and hope to those with pregnancy, parenting, and post-abortion needs in the Syracuse area and with adoption needs throughout New York State.

Our continuum of services reaches out to people at different stages of their lives to encourage them to value and choose life.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Raising foster children is a rewarding and life-changing experience. You can make a real difference in a child's life, helping them on a path toward success.

Remember that fostering affects the whole family, so talk to your partner and biological children if you're considering this journey. Learn more about what to expect and ensure it fits your lifestyle. You must be healthy and have enough time and energy to care for a child and meet their needs. This is important for gaining foster parent approval because every child must have this foundation of support.

Each state has requirements for foster parents. In New York, applicants must:

  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Live in a safe and stable environment
  • Have enough space for a foster child
  • Show financially stability
  • Prove that all family members are in good health
  • Pass a background check
  • Clear a home safety inspection
  • Attend required foster parent training
  • Complete the Home Study process
  • Provide a minimum of three character references

Foster families in New York can rent or own their homes. Adults can become foster parents no matter their marital or divorce status. All adults who are living in the home with foster children must pass the New York required criminal background check. Every adult must complete both state and federal background checks and undergo fingerprinting.

Interested candidates can make the first call to foster services and get the approval and licensing process started. Contact the New York Office of Children and Family Services (NYOCFS) or your local Department of Social Services (DSS). The first step after expressing interest will be to attend a foster orientation. Potential foster parents can learn about the approval process at the event and get questions answered by a foster child advocate.

The foster parent training requirement begins with pre-service training. After getting licensed, foster parents must participate in ongoing training and educational programs.

Our family has been associated with New Hope Family Services for more than 31 years. We have completed three special needs adoptions through New Hope, and made some forever friends there.
My oldest daughter and I have been volunteering at New Hope for several years. We have found the staff to be loving and encouraging at all times. We are thrilled to see the growth and progress in helping families in our community to survive and thrive.

My first experience and blessing working with New Hope was in 2001 when they facilitated the international adoption of our daughter. This was a wonderful time in our lives and the staff was very professional and caring guiding us through the process.
I am now starting a new opportunity to support New Hope in the ministry of the operation of the Mobile Unit for community outreach. This will allow the Team at New Hope to go into multiple communities and offer free guidance and medical counselling to anyone who may need help and support. I am looking forward to being apart of God’s Hand extended to our family’s as the staff of New Hope reach out with love and compassion in the work of Christ.

Very helpful and kind. The lady I met with helped me with everything from finding resources, baby supplies, references, post pardom coping skills, words of wisdom, etc. They have so much to offer. This place is amazing. 10 stars.

I volunteer at New Hope Family Services in Syracuse, NY once a month. I would like to be there more! Everyone I have met and/or volunteered with have been very friendly and helpful. A ready smile and kind word comes to mind. The best part, though, is that they truly care for the women and men they serve. Everyone is treated with dignity and the staff/volunteers go out of their way to try to meet the needs of their clients. Confidentiality is very important at New Hope and I was made aware of the importance of this before I started. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and is in need of some of the services New Hope offers, I encourage you to check it out. You will not be disappointed in this valuable community service.
