Good Shepherd Services
Many of New York’s children, youth, and families are working hard to be successful. We provide access to opportunity through high-quality programs designed to help individuals and communities thrive.
Good Shepherd Services takes a serious and rigorous approach to our work. We see limitless potential in the communities we partner with, and we implement our proven approach with new, innovative ways to respond to what children and families need.
We provide safe, temporary care in the homes of trained foster parents to children and adolescents who have been removed from their families for various reasons. We work intensively with birth parents and caregivers to get them the help they need so they can be reunited safely and permanently with their children. Children receive case management, medical, behavioral and educational evaluations and services.

Requirements to become a foster parent
Raising foster children is a rewarding and life-changing experience. You can make a real difference in a child's life, helping them on a path toward success.
Remember that fostering affects the whole family, so talk to your partner and biological children if you're considering this journey. Learn more about what to expect and ensure it fits your lifestyle. You must be healthy and have enough time and energy to care for a child and meet their needs. This is important for gaining foster parent approval because every child must have this foundation of support.
Each state has requirements for foster parents. In New York, applicants must:
- Be 21 years of age or older
- Live in a safe and stable environment
- Have enough space for a foster child
- Show financially stability
- Prove that all family members are in good health
- Pass a background check
- Clear a home safety inspection
- Attend required foster parent training
- Complete the Home Study process
- Provide a minimum of three character references
Foster families in New York can rent or own their homes. Adults can become foster parents no matter their marital or divorce status. All adults who are living in the home with foster children must pass the New York required criminal background check. Every adult must complete both state and federal background checks and undergo fingerprinting.
Interested candidates can make the first call to foster services and get the approval and licensing process started. Contact the New York Office of Children and Family Services (NYOCFS) or your local Department of Social Services (DSS). The first step after expressing interest will be to attend a foster orientation. Potential foster parents can learn about the approval process at the event and get questions answered by a foster child advocate.
The foster parent training requirement begins with pre-service training. After getting licensed, foster parents must participate in ongoing training and educational programs.

My family has been trying too adopt OUR FAMILY for almost two years. I have three cousins in this agency and we still haven’t gotten anywhere. They are our own family and they’ve been stalling for this long. All they care about is the money and making sure things are way more difficult. I’m so sick of seeing my own parents struggle with paying too drive out there. Picking the kids up from New York, WE LIVE IN MN BTW!!! I’m getting sick of seeing my parents pay thousands of dollars for kids that we can’t even have because “the paperwork is coming in” or “we are still waiting for the documents”. This agency lies and stalls for as long as they can because every kid too them is a paycheck, they are unorganized and just don’t care. I want my family with my family. But if this keeps on going the way it is it’ll never happen. This is just a horrible agency, horrible workers and just a sad excuse good agency.

Cannot get results from this agency! ,if I could give a minus 0 for them it is well deserved! The issues that I have with this agency are just too many to list. The case worker tries, but, there are too many hands in the cookie jar!
This agency needs a surprise inspection to review Management, the policy and procedures manuals, MSDS, Client's Records, Contracts with other agencies, financial records, etc.. Good Shepherd is a little bit too comfortable with their modes of operations.

Good Shepherd's Services is helping me and my family work out a plan in order to become a stronger unit. I could write a book about this surreal experience, but I just wanted to let others know that this personal experience has proven to me that most social workers devote their life with altruistic intentions of helping families like mine! Thank you Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Rivera, Mrs. Collazo!

This place is a joke. One person tell you this the other that. No communication skills nor customer service. They lie to you take ya kids then blame the judge. Smh. Deidra Hawkins is very unpredictable, unpleasant, unplanned and unorganized. She has kelly doing all her dirty work. She talks entirely too much and never let the other party respond. Her line is we are concerned about the children. She must be dont have any because she is the main one who runs the show but have nothing to show. Her supervisor is worse. They all play games but they have the wrong family. I have no idea who posting good things its a lie. They must dont want the kids. Kelly your the best i know that you work really hard at your job dont fall for them find some place else to work you too pretty for that dump.
