Requirements to become a foster parent
New Jersey offers excellent support and services for foster parents in the state. Let's take a closer look at what's offered.
Foster Parent Training
To become a foster parent in New Jersey, you are required to attend PRIDE training. There are three major components to the training including pre-service training, core training, and advanced and specialized training. Within the three components, you will learn skills in five essential competency categories:
- Nurturing and protecting children
- Meeting the developmental needs and addressing developmental delays of children
- Supporting the relationships between families and children
- Making safe and nurturing family connections that will last a lifetime
- Working as a member of a professional team
All licensed foster parents will also have access to many additional workshops, both in-person and online. This may be through e-Learning, webinars, home correspondence courses, or support groups and meetings.
Parent Support
Foster parents receive a monthly payment starting at $716, a clothing allowance, and health care coverage for the child in their care. The amount you receive varies, depending on the child's age and specific needs.
You may also be eligible for:
- Childcare services while working or attending foster parent training
- Special needs transportation reimbursement
- Infant care items
- Essential safety gear such as car seats and bicycle helmets
- Flexible funds for child's special needs

When I got pregnant, I didn't know where to turn. Fortunately, I found Adoptions from the Heart. They were kind and non-judgemental, and helped me place my daughter with a great new family.

As we considered in-state and out-of-state adoption we needed home study from State of NJ certified and licensed private adoption agency. Most of private agencies didn't want to bother with us. From our first inquiry and interaction with Adoptions From the Heart we felt welcomed and comfortable. Chris Peszka met with us just before Christmas Holidays and was straight forward , thorough and professional. Four months passed and we have approved adoption home sstudy.Considering Holidays time off , Chris and his office moved things along quite efficiently. Yes you have to pay for the home study but it's a good value and justifiable considering amount of work he has to do now by sending out our materials to different agencies which he does immediately and without any delays. At the same time we went succesfully through State of NJ approval process so we know the process of approval. AFH has exceeded our expectations making the process straightforward and efficient. We recommend AFH and Chris Peszka particularly to any parent(s) interested in adoption of older children (in our case 6 - 12) as our experience with them was fantastic and we are glad we found AFH and had Chris as our social worker. I went through an adoption process and Adoptions from the Heart was designated to be the agency to complete the home study. From the first contact that I had with the agency, Jan was helpful. i was nervous, anxious and excited and Jan understood how I felt and helped me work through all those emotions. Once I met with Chris, I was blown away by his empathy and professionalism and once he met my kids, I knew that this agency really cares for the well being of the children. Chris was always available when I needed him and he was also in top of my needs with reminders and communication. My adoption has been completed and I could not be happier that I met a group of people that really cared for my kids and I and I truly do recommend this agency to anyone looking to adopt.
