We believe every child needs a safe place to live, and caring, supportive relationships to thrive.

The need for safe and supportive homes for children in transition continues to grow. In 2018, about 6,700 Minnesotan children entered foster care. The number of children in Minnesota foster care on an average day rose 14% from 2016 to 2018, with estimated 10,050 children in out-of-home placement daily.

We serve:

Youth from infancy to age 18 who are in need of out-of-home care.
Youth and young adults with therapeutic needs.
Young adults aged 18 – 21 who meet certain eligibility requirements.
Our goal is to reunify children to their family and community whenever possible. We currently have a great need for families able and willing to foster sibling groups, school-aged children and older youth. We are also seeking foster families who are supportive and affirming of LGBTQ youth..

Requirements to become a foster parent

There are several support services available for foster parents in Minnesota. Let's take a look at what's available:

Support Payments

Minnesotan foster parents receive a monthly basic payment to help with the care costs of the foster child. Payments vary depending on the child's age and circumstances. They start at $650 per month.

In some circumstances, foster parents can also receive a difficulty of care supplemental monthly rate. These payments help support children with physical and mental difficulties and can be up to $1,500 per month.

Medical and Dental Coverage

In Minnesota, foster children receive Medicaid coverage for their medical and dental needs.

The foster parents are responsible for arranging the child's medical care and must attend all necessary appointments to maintain their health and well-being.

Training and Support Groups

There are plenty of support groups and resources available for foster parents in Minnesota. These services offer ongoing support and an opportunity to share experiences with other people in the same situation as you.

Additional training can also help you be the best caregiver possible for your foster kid.

The only thing more dangerous than an organization that knows that it's doing wrong is one that is doing wrong but thinks that it's doing right, and that is CHLSS. They offer only minimal support and very few resources to families. Everything is done in a manner that let's you know it checks a box, but rarely offers meaningful support. They choose willful ignorance if that means a child stays in a placement despite safety concerns for that child or the family. Working with them is an unfortunate reminder of how broken our foster care system is and how it continues to let down not only the children it was meant to protect, but also the families that are trying to help them. Kids deserve better, families deserve better, and they will not find it here.

We go months without hearing from our worker, our whole process was delayed multiple times due to her loosing paperwork and going completely MIA multiple times. They get 30 days to write a home study after everything is complete, but ours took 2 months. Not sure if it's just our worker our the organization as a whole.

My husband and I adopted our daughter from here. The process was very punitive and focused on jumping through hoops. Even when we asked, they didn't provide support to help us be a better adoptive family; all they care about is us jumping through hoops, which we did. We are going to a different agency for our next adoption that cares more about supporting our family. We know there are legal requirements to follow, but adoption should be about more than legal requirements. We are creating a family together after all!
