We seek to nurture the roots that were first planted by our founder, as their strength has fueled more than 100 years of growth and opportunity for the countless children we continue to serve.

Requirements to become a foster parent
Parents can access the Michigan Foster Care Portal (MFCP), which is a tool that helps expedite licensure. The portal can track progress and list the next steps a foster parent needs to take. The MFCP also contains FAQs and helpful guides for parents.
In addition to online tools, foster families also receive some financial support. How much they receive depends on the child's age and needs. Parents may also be entitled to additional reimbursement that covers care costs.
Plus, foster families can access many local and state-wide support organizations and advocacy groups. These groups provide resources, answer questions, and are happy to help form connections between foster parents.
Your foster care agency is always there if you have questions or concerns. Their goal is to ensure the child's well-being and assist parents through the fostering process and beyond.
Another path you might want to consider is co-parenting with the birth parents. The end goal in most foster cases is to reunite a child with their parents or primary caregiver. You'll work with the birth parents anyway to set up visitations, and co-parenting can make your job easier.
Working further with the birth parents can also make the entire fostering process less stressful for a child. They won't feel as if they have to "choose" between homes and families.

Not a very good place. I feel really bad for the children here at Starr. I believe it's due to the newer people who run it in the main office. Years ago this place was a place of hope. Today it is a disgrace and needs to be gone through starting with the getting new people to run it. Starr is also financially unstable and doesn't properly handle their business. My opinion though.

My son was there 4 yrs ago and I would have given 5 starrs.. This time he went back n the services n Staff had fallen apart. The workers are overly extended w too many clients per worker. No supervision... And my son was hurt multiple time by reg. babysitting staff. Who by the way you couldnt tell apart from the kids.. Please hire more people. So these kids can get the help they need to get. Also will not return my sons things. Everything of value was kept . Clothes n personal belongings. Cant even get his shoes.. Shame on you Starr Commonwealth......

I just attended a Glasswing Racial Healing class. The facilitators were very professional and kind. The facilitators provided a safe place for everyone to express their views. The class was very transformational and real conversations took place about the very important and sensitive topic of race. I would highly recommend this class!

I spent almost two years at Albion back in the late 90’s, and I have very mixed emotions about my time at Starr. On one hand I met some amazing staff members who really did care about us and left a lasting positive impression on my life; Mr. Guido, Mr. Stitt and Mrs “Mamma” Wingfeild, just to name a few. I also developed a brotherhood with some of the other boys in my cottage that we have maintained for over 20 years now. I was one of the founding members of the Albion choir as it exists today; it was an all boys choir back then, but I was able to channel a great deal of my pain through my involment in that and I still find singing therapeutic today. One of my greatest memories in life is shaking Muhammad Ali’s hand and having my picture taken with him when he was awarded the Child Advocacy Award. But on the other hand, myself and many other boys suffered a great deal of emotional and physical abuse at the hands of certain staff members, Mr. Schnider being the one that sticks in my mind the most. Mr. Schnider was an extreamy abusive staff member, not just physically, but mentally and verbally. It was almost as if he enjoyed breaking us down and making us feel small and insignificant. I never once felt like he cared about any of us, and I will never forget or forgive him for treating us so poorly. He knew the backgrounds that most of us had come from; the physical, mental and sexual abuse we had all sustained throughout our young lives, yet he chose to further the cycle of abuse with no fear of consequences for his actions.
I believe Starr was once founded on something great. Although I never knew him, all of us boys knew Uncle Floyd and his vision very well. Unfortunately that vision never really shined through during the time I was there, or at least not in the way I think Uncle Floyd would have wanted it to.
