Listening Ear Crisis Center, is a private nonprofit, United Way human service agency based in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan providing services across mid and northern Michigan. Our purpose is to support and improve human life around the clock. Listening Ear is committed to its values and its slogan “Focusing on What People Can Do”.
Since 1981, we have been licensed by the State of Michigan as a child placement agency. The Child Foster Care program provides temporary, emergency, and long-term care for children ages 10 to 17, though we are licensed to help from birth to 17 years old. We accept referrals from Community Mental Health Boards, Department of Human Services, Family or Trial Courts, or Listening Ear’s Runaway & Homeless Youth Program. Fees are determined on a case-by-case basis. We’re currently seeking families in Mid and Northwestern Michigan who are interested in providing foster care for these young people, especially for families who can provide a supportive home for older children. These children may have developmental, physical, medical, emotional, or behavioral challenges, as well as family issues. However, our Foster Care Professionals will be with you every step of the way to guide you through the process, provide training and 24/7 support.

Requirements to become a foster parent

Parents can access the Michigan Foster Care Portal (MFCP), which is a tool that helps expedite licensure. The portal can track progress and list the next steps a foster parent needs to take. The MFCP also contains FAQs and helpful guides for parents.

In addition to online tools, foster families also receive some financial support. How much they receive depends on the child's age and needs. Parents may also be entitled to additional reimbursement that covers care costs.

Plus, foster families can access many local and state-wide support organizations and advocacy groups. These groups provide resources, answer questions, and are happy to help form connections between foster parents.

Your foster care agency is always there if you have questions or concerns. Their goal is to ensure the child's well-being and assist parents through the fostering process and beyond.

Another path you might want to consider is co-parenting with the birth parents. The end goal in most foster cases is to reunite a child with their parents or primary caregiver. You'll work with the birth parents anyway to set up visitations, and co-parenting can make your job easier.

Working further with the birth parents can also make the entire fostering process less stressful for a child. They won't feel as if they have to "choose" between homes and families.

The staff is exceptionally helpful and sensitive to the help of the public, however the receptionist that answers the phone is not only rude on the phone, but in person as well. She needs help with her people skills. Rest of the staff is top notch! Deavia (child/teen worker) is exceptional at her job and a great person. She is kind, considerate and reliable. Quality and valued conversation with Miss Deavia!!! She really makes a difference! 10+ 🌟 for Deavia!!!
