Requirements to become a foster parent
Parents can access the Michigan Foster Care Portal (MFCP), which is a tool that helps expedite licensure. The portal can track progress and list the next steps a foster parent needs to take. The MFCP also contains FAQs and helpful guides for parents.
In addition to online tools, foster families also receive some financial support. How much they receive depends on the child's age and needs. Parents may also be entitled to additional reimbursement that covers care costs.
Plus, foster families can access many local and state-wide support organizations and advocacy groups. These groups provide resources, answer questions, and are happy to help form connections between foster parents.
Your foster care agency is always there if you have questions or concerns. Their goal is to ensure the child's well-being and assist parents through the fostering process and beyond.
Another path you might want to consider is co-parenting with the birth parents. The end goal in most foster cases is to reunite a child with their parents or primary caregiver. You'll work with the birth parents anyway to set up visitations, and co-parenting can make your job easier.
Working further with the birth parents can also make the entire fostering process less stressful for a child. They won't feel as if they have to "choose" between homes and families.

Greater Hopes has exceeded all expectations! They have truly helped us prepare for adoption through the questions they asked through the application process and have provided training opportunities to prepare in our time of waiting. We are so grateful for all they do!

When we were researching adoption agencies, Cathy was the only person that responded to all of my questions over email instead of making us come in for a meeting. Once we did decide to meet with the agency, they made it clear their number one concern was for the well-being of the children they serve and their compassion, honesty and kindness really drew us to them. Cathy and her team care so much about every person they work with and we couldn't be more thankful to have found them!
2023-Edited to add that we now have a beautiful son and have been able to blend both our families together, through an open adoption facilitated by Greater Hopes. Cathy and Mya have made it clear they're always available to support us in any way they can and we're grateful. Highly recommend.

We came to Greater Hopes based on a recommendation from our neighbor. I emailed Cathy very late on a holiday and she responded to answer my questions right away. We are so thankful we found this team to help us on our adoption journey!

My wife and I chose Greater Hopes because of their support to biological parents. It is very evident that they understand what open adoption means, more so than other agencies we considered. Adoption is hard but it can be a wonderful thing if done supportively. Greater Hopes does an excellent job of educating what that means for both biological and adoptive families, then providing support to all involved. We appreciate Great Hopes and encourage others to consider them as well.
