Requirements to become a foster parent

Parents can access the Michigan Foster Care Portal (MFCP), which is a tool that helps expedite licensure. The portal can track progress and list the next steps a foster parent needs to take. The MFCP also contains FAQs and helpful guides for parents.

In addition to online tools, foster families also receive some financial support. How much they receive depends on the child's age and needs. Parents may also be entitled to additional reimbursement that covers care costs.

Plus, foster families can access many local and state-wide support organizations and advocacy groups. These groups provide resources, answer questions, and are happy to help form connections between foster parents.

Your foster care agency is always there if you have questions or concerns. Their goal is to ensure the child's well-being and assist parents through the fostering process and beyond.

Another path you might want to consider is co-parenting with the birth parents. The end goal in most foster cases is to reunite a child with their parents or primary caregiver. You'll work with the birth parents anyway to set up visitations, and co-parenting can make your job easier.

Working further with the birth parents can also make the entire fostering process less stressful for a child. They won't feel as if they have to "choose" between homes and families.

We have been with this agency as foster parents for going on 5 years. We have been part of reunification’s and now termination cases. In all of them the staff have always been friendly. Our licensing worker, Katie, has always treated us with respect and helped us learn our way through this adventure. Our case worker, Erica, has truly been a Godsend every step of the way. The workers have rejoiced, mourned, and walked through all the ups and downs with us and our family. Fostering Futures goes above and beyond in all they do!

We are a borrowed bed with Fostering Futures. So far so good! Caseworker is great at getting back to us with questions we have, drop offs for parenting visits have run smoothly, and they seem on top of paperwork. No complaints & they've been really friendly to work with :)

We have had an overall good experience with Fostering Futures. We have fostered 3 children now through the agency. I will say that when I talk to other foster parents they always seem to think we are not getting enough support. We can't compare since we haven't worked with other agencies. But they have been responsive and empathetic and there for us. We have switched licensing workers three times now but have been with the same foster care worker the whole time. Which is most important since we have contact with her often. Fostering is the most difficult thing we have ever done in our life and I don't think that anyone or any agency can do enough to make this an easy journey.

My Husband and I worked with Fostering Futures first to get our foster care license and now they are helping us through our first placement. The entire process has gone smoothly thanks to the employees’ and agency’s guidance. Our case has not been easy, but they have always been quick to respond and find answers for us. The monthly support groups are very helpful. We love working with Fostering Futures!

This agency has to be the worst most unprofessional place anyone could ever step foot in. From disorganized staff to an extremely rude, condescending owner. What was ment to be a happy fun experience was a complete nightmare and a year of our life we will never get back. They constantly lie about the process and when you give any form of resistance and question some of the things they are asking for, after they tell you they don’t ask for it but want it in your case but won’t say why, they get mad at you and get very rude. I received my copy of the the home study and found multiple errors and twisted words in it. Just stay away there are other much better agencies in the area that you would be much better going to.
